Derek Chang now holds the positions of president and CEO within the Liberty Media Corporation.
Since March 2021, Chang has served as a director for Liberty Media. He also held prominent leadership positions in businesses such as EverPass Media, the NBA, DirecTV, Scripps, Charter, and TCI. His tenure begins after Greg Maffei’s announced departure from the role, which will occur at the end of 2024.
Starting from February 1st, 2025, Chang will begin working in his new position. However, John Malone, the chairman of Liberty Media, will act as the interim CEO until that date.
I’m excited to announce that Derek will be taking on the role of CEO at Liberty Media. With his experience in both operational and investment positions, deep knowledge of our industries, and familiarity with Liberty, he is perfectly suited to guide Liberty through its next phase,” said John Malone, Chairman of Liberty Media. “Over the past 25 years, I’ve had the pleasure of working with Derek, and I have always admired his leadership skills, wide range of knowledge, and global outlook. I am eager to assist him and the Liberty management team as they continue to boost shareholder value.
More recently, Chang served as the executive chair of EverPass Media, a company he co-founded with Alex Kaplan in collaboration with the NFL and RedBird Capital Partners. However, he will relinquish his position as executive chairman while continuing to serve on the board for EverPass Media. He is now transitioning to Liberty Media.
From 2018 to 2020, he served as the CEO of NBA China. Prior to this, he held multiple leadership positions at Scripps Network Interactive from 2013 to 2018, including heading international lifestyle channels. Earlier in his career, he was the Executive Vice President (EVP) of content strategy and development at DIRECTV, and also served as EVP of finance & strategy and interim co-CFO at Charter Communications.
As a proud alum, I’ve earned my Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the prestigious Stanford University and a bachelor’s degree in history from the equally esteemed Yale University.
Chang, along with Malone, Dob Bennett (Vice Chairman), and Chase Carey, will become members of the executive committee on the Liberty Media Board. Furthermore, Stefano Domenicali, who holds the position of president & CEO at Formula 1, will answer to a committee within the Liberty Media board that includes Bennett, Carey, and Chang.
For several years, I’ve had the honor of collaborating with John Malone and the Liberty team, during my tenure at TCI, DIRECTV, and as a board member for Starz and Liberty. I’ve long respected their history of generating value for investors and partners. At present, our priorities are evident: we aim to refine the portfolio structure by separating Liberty Live and foster growth in our appealing operational assets, such as F1 and MotoGP post-acquisition, to maintain their progress and prepare for future investments. As we look ahead, Liberty has consistently demonstrated a long-term approach in its investment strategy while also being agile enough to seize new opportunities. These qualities will continue to define our strategy moving forward.
