In this text, the author is discussing the box office performances of several movies during the weekend of their release. The top performer was Arkasha Stevenson’s horror film “Longlegs,” which had a strong opening and is expected to become Neon’s biggest domestic release yet. Another major success was the animated sequel “Despicable Me 4,” which saw only a 40% drop in ticket sales from its debut weekend, bringing in over $211 million in North America so far.
Chris Renaud and Patrick Delage’s “Despicable Me 4” from Illumination Entertainment was undeniably leading the box office this weekend. The animated film raked in a significant amount of revenue during its first three days, earning approximately $75 million. Even if the blockbuster saw a 60% decrease in earnings over the weekend, it would not give up its position as “America’s Top-Grossing Film.”
Looking back, that was a reasonable evaluation of last week’s box office performance. However, this weekend’s numbers still have some surprises in store. For instance, Osgood Perkins’ independent horror film “Longlegs,” distributed by Neon, has outperformed expectations and is making waves with impressive ticket sales. It may have come in second place to “Despicable Me 4,” but the buzz around “Longlegs” is stealing headlines. Here are the Top 10 movies for this weekend, so stay tuned for my analysis afterwards.
Following Months Of Building Buzz, Longlegs Sets A Box Office Record For Neon
After achieving significant acclaim following the 2020 distribution of Bong Joon-ho’s Best Picture-winning film “Parasite,” Neon has established itself as a highly respected indie distributor in Hollywood. This year, Neon has continued to build on this reputation with impressive box office successes. In March alone, Michael Mohan’s film “Immaculate” featuring Sydney Sweeney set a new opening weekend record for the company, raking in $5.3 million during its first three days of release. Now, “Longlegs” is adding to Neon’s impressive track record by surpassing this record with even more impressive box office earnings.
As a gamer, I’d put it this way: “The game ‘Longlegs’ raked in an impressive $22.6 million over the last three days, but hold up, that might not sound like much at first glance. However, upon closer inspection, you’ll find out why this is a major win.”
Similar to most contemporary horror films, “Longlegs” was produced with a modest budget, approximately under $10 million according to Deadline. Yet, this low-cost production has generated an impressive amount of excitement prior to its premiere. Its marketing strategy, which artfully concealed Nicolas Cage’s serial killer character, added to the intrigue. Furthermore, critics have been vocal in their praise for the film since its early screenings. When it first hit Rotten Tomatoes in June, it boasted a perfect 100 percent score, although this number has now dropped to 87 percent. Regardless, “Longlegs” continues to receive considerable acclaim. In my TopMob review, I awarded the film five stars.
As a dedicated gamer, I’d put it this way: The smaller scale of Longlegs’ release added an exciting twist to its box office performance. Unlike the behemoth movies that dominate more than 4,000 screens nationwide, Longlegs gracefully graced only around 2,500 locations. The average revenue generated from these theaters was impressive, with each screen yielding approximately $9,000.
As a horrified fan of this year’s box office hits, I must admit that the title’s success has left many other wide release horror movies in its wake. Not only did it surpass the earnings of “Immaculate,” but also titles like Ti West’s “MaXXXine” ($11.8 million), Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg’s “Tarot” ($18.8 million), Ishana Night Shyamalan’s “The Watchers” ($19.1 million), and Arkasha Stevenson’s “The First Omen” ($20.1 million). And it won’t be long before this terrifying title outearns titles such as Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s “Abigail” ($25.0 million), Jeff Wadlow’s “Imaginary” ($28 million), and Bryce McGuire’s “Night Swim” ($32.5 million).
It’s intriguing to observe if any upcoming films can approach the current box office success of Michael Sarnoski’s “A Quiet Place: Day One” ($116.2 million) in the weeks ahead during the summer season.
It’s uncertain where “Longlegs” will rank among the highest-grossing horror movies of 2024 for Neon, but it’s likely to become their biggest domestic hit overall once its box office run is complete. Currently, “Parasite” holds this title for Neon with a theatrical gross of $53.4 million. However, “Longlegs” is currently in third place, just behind Craig Gillespie’s “I, Tonya,” which made $30 million during its cinematic release.
Despicable Me 4 Drops Just 40 Percent Weekend-To-Weekend Following Its Excellent Debut
In the opening, I mentioned that despite a significant 60% decrease in ticket sales from one weekend to the next, Despicable Me 4 was still predicted to come out on top at the box office, raking in around $30 million during its last three days. However, contrary to expectations, this isn’t what transpired. Instead, there has been an overwhelming response from families, leading to a more modest 40% decrease in sales compared to its initial Friday-to-Sunday period.
In the past three days, “Despicable Me 4” raked in an additional $44.7 million, bringing its total earnings in North America to over $211.1 million. Consequently, this animated blockbuster with the voices of Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, and Will Ferrell now ranks as the third highest-grossing film domestically in 2023, surpassing the box office revenue of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” during its spring release.
As a passionate moviegoer, I can’t help but marvel at the box office successes of two highly anticipated films: Kelsey Mann’s “Inside Out 2” and Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two.” These masterpieces have left quite an impression on audiences worldwide. With impressive earnings of $572.6 million for “Inside Out 2” (and an additional $20.7 million this weekend) and $282.1 million for “Dune: Part Two,” they’ve truly made their mark in the cinematic universe. However, there’s still some ground to be covered as they currently rank seventh and sixth, respectively, with a global total of $437.8 million for “Inside Out 2” and $282.1 million for “Dune: Part Two.” The race to the top continues!
The fourth installment of “Despicable Me,” currently titled as “Despicable Me 4,” is lagging behind “Despicable Me 2” in terms of box office success within the main series of the franchise, which excludes the Minions spin-offs. By its twelfth day or second weekend in theaters during 2013, it had grossed $228.4 million. Eventually, it accumulated a domestic revenue of $381.1 million.
Fly Me To The Moon Has Star Power But Has To Settle For Fifth Place In Its Opening Weekend
Over the past three days, Longlegs and Despicable Me 4 enjoyed success at the box office. However, a noteworthy disappointment was Fly Me To The Moon, directed by Greg Berlanti. Despite boasting an impressive cast including Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, and Woody Harrelson, the wide release failed to generate significant buzz. Critics gave it a mostly average review, and as a result, the movie only earned $10 million since its opening on Friday. It debuted in fifth place at the box office.
In the upcoming week, the highly anticipated film “Twisters” by Lee Isaac Chung is set to hit theaters, bringing a significant shake-up with its star-studded cast led by Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos. This tornado-themed disaster movie has garnered positive reviews from critics, indicating a potential blockbuster performance at the box office. Join us again at TopMob next Sunday for an update on its success and a sneak peek into the remaining movie releases of 2024 in our Movie Release Calendar.
