Despite ‘mixed’ user reviews, Elden Ring Nightreign explodes onto Steam, with 300,000-150,000 players presumably getting wrecked by a big dog

Elden Ring Nightreign isn’t receiving top review scores from players, which is not too unexpected. I must admit that after 19 hours of play, I’m beginning to have fun, but it took some time to adapt to the intense, unbridled chaos that characterizes FromSoftware’s most innovative game yet.

Despite not being stopped, it has still managed to make a significant impact on the Steam concurrent player charts, much like Radahn with his terrifying meteor attack. According to SteamDB, Elden Ring Nightreign had an impressive debut with around 300,000 players. The number has since dropped to approximately 150,000, but some fluctuation is normal.

Reflecting on that data, it feels quite substantial if I were to draw a parallel with the peak popularity of Helldivers 2. Back in its prime, it took about a month for the number of simultaneous players to be cut in half. So, what’s causing this shift?

In our Elden Ring Nightreign review, Tyler Colp from PC Gamer accurately describes it as one of FromSoftware’s quirkiest and challenging games since the ’90s, and I agree with his observation. Unlike the mainline Souls series where you can gradually learn mechanics through repeated battles against a mountain until it collapses, Nightreign doesn’t allow for this slow, patient approach.

Initially, Nightreign felt like a whirlwind, almost like being trapped in a pressure cooker, especially when playing solo, which isn’t my usual choice unless I’m seeking an intense challenge. My initial encounters with the game were frustrating, perplexing, and seemed chaotic beyond belief. It wasn’t until I took multiple spins on FromSoftware’s thrilling rollercoaster that I began to grasp its intricacies. I can understand why about 150,000 players have momentarily stepped away from the fray.

It’s frustrating that significant factors contributing to the game’s advancement, such as acquiring new relic bowls, taking on remembrance challenges, and more, are only accessible after defeating the initial Nightlord.

It’s uncertain if they’ll try again after taking a break, but those with a true fascination for the strange and unpredictable might return for more. I, too, couldn’t resist the allure to delve deeper, and my persistence has been richly rewarded in terms of understanding this complex, messy, and stressful mixture.
