The idea for this event was born three weeks ago, as stated by its originator on Twitter. This event is being organized by YouTuber Anthony Po, who apparently did not reach out to city authorities or the NYC Parks Department for permission to stage a big gathering there. Posters promoting the event have been spotted around town, and it’s one of several such events organized by Po. For instance, he staged the Cheeseball Man spectacle in Union Square back in April which garnered widespread attention (“I consumed a jar of cheese balls in front of 3,000 people and turned into something like a New York City legend”).
After parting ways from the team associated with YouTube sensation MrBeast, who is renowned for his elaborate stunts aimed at viral fame, Po now has approximately 1.8 million followers. He spent about a year with this group of pranksters before deciding to branch out on his own. His primary focus has been organizing unique public events that showcase his distinct style. This weekend, Po put on a stylish tuxedo and tall hat to emcee an event. The competition, which awarded a $50 prize to the winner, ended up giving the cash prize to all finalists instead. In front of the audience, contestants were questioned about their future plans with Kylie Jenner (who Timothée Chalamet is rumored to be dating) and their fluency in French.
Yet, it didn’t take long into the competition at Washington Square Park – even before Chalamet made his appearance – that police instructed the gathering to vacate the premises. According to CBS News, this was reported. In a phone conversation with The Hollywood Reporter on Monday, Po admitted receiving a $500 fine for hosting an “unauthorized costume contest”.
Po expressed regret over the situation, stating that even if he and his team didn’t attend, the event would still go on. He pointed out that people might not realize there was a person organizing it all. It was simply a gathering, and they had informed the authorities about their willingness to collaborate, asking them to let them take charge. However, he felt that because they were dealing with law enforcement, clear communication and approval might be challenging.
At the event, four individuals were detained and issued citations, according to CBS. However, THR was informed by Po that he was only made aware of a single arrest, which occurred when an attendee refused to leave the park as an NYPD officer tried to escort them out.
Po stated that the individual was essentially following actions one might take when confronted by a police officer under pressure. Unfortunately, it wasn’t accepted, leading to fines and legal proceedings.
Paige Nguyen, a producer for a YouTube creator, shared with THR that she’s been collaborating with Po since their time at Rutgers University and regards him as a mentor. Previously, she told The Associated Press that what started as a casual joke has now turned into chaos, referring to Sunday’s event.
The team moved to Mercer Park nearby, and eventually, the spectators chose Miles Mitchell, a senior from a Staten Island college, as the victor.
