Detective Pikachu 2 Gets Surprising Update Thanks to a Pokmon Leak

As a lifelong cinephile who grew up with the original Pokémon games and anime series, the news of a Detective Pikachu sequel has me both excited and cautiously optimistic. The first movie was a divisive success, with general audiences loving it but hardcore fans of the franchise expressing disappointment due to its deviations from the source material.

Information leaked from Pokémon game developers, Game Freak, indicates that Team Rocket may be preparing for another launch – this time possibly for a sequel to the hit movie “Detective Pikachu.” Starring Ryan Reynolds and Justice Smith, “Detective Pikachu” is based on the popular spin-off game of the same name. Reynolds lent his voice to the yellow-tailed detective character who guided Tim Goodman (Smith) in his quest to uncover the whereabouts of his lost father.

Game Freak’s data breach mostly focused on information concerning their upcoming video game projects. But hidden among this data was an intriguing tidbit about Detective Pikachu 2 – it seems that this sequel, called The Great Detective Pikachu, has been in production since the year 2021! Furthermore, it appears that Jordan Vogt-Roberts, renowned for Kong: Skull Island, will be directing the upcoming movie.

The hack revealed that the upcoming movie “The Great Detective Pikachu” was initially slated for release in 2024, but given recent developments, it’s highly likely that the movie’s launch date will be changed. There’s a possibility that “The Great Detective Pikachu” might have been put on hold by Game Freak, which could account for the scarcity of information released about the project. Fans have eagerly awaited a sequel following the hit success of “Detective Pikachu”, both critically and commercially. The movie garnered positive feedback from critics as well as strong reactions from viewers, and it also proved to be a box office smash with earnings of $450 million on a production budget of just $150 million.

It’s quite possible that most viewers enjoyed Detective Pikachu, given its Rotten Tomatoes score of 79%. However, it’s also likely that a significant minority of 21% who didn’t care for the film were hardcore fans of the Pokémon franchise. While general audiences seemed to appreciate the movie, die-hard fans of the fantastical universe may have been less than enthused with its adaptation.

As a dedicated Pokémon fan, I found myself grappling with the departures taken by the film “Pokémon Detective Pikachu.” Critics, including myself, noted that it veered significantly from the established storylines of the video games we cherish. Moreover, the movie shifted the overall mood from the source material, which typically presented a light-hearted, comedic atmosphere despite portraying a world where humans control and battle sentient creatures. In contrast, “Detective Pikachu” aimed to broaden its audience scope by intertwining humorous moments with more mature themes and somber sequences, setting it apart from the usual Pokémon adventures we’ve grown accustomed to.

Regarding The Great Detective Pikachu, its status still seems unclear following the recent leak. Although the hack provided additional details on the project, it failed to clarify whether the movie will eventually see the light of day after being held back for so long. Justice Smith, who was part of the original cast, is also unsure about any potential sequel’s development. In January this year, Smith stated that he too is in the dark concerning The Great Detective Pikachu.

I haven’t received any updates or calls about it, only seen some online releases, so I’m still patiently waiting to hear more directly.
