Dev Patel to Direct, Star in Period Revenge Action Thriller ‘The Peasant’ for Fifth Season (Exclusive)

Dev Patel is expanding his versatile talents in the film industry by taking on multiple roles in the upcoming movie titled “The Peasant“. This intriguing period action-thriller is being produced by Fifth Season and Thunder Road Pictures, with Patel contributing as both writer and actor.

I’m thrilled to be rejoining forces with Thunder Road again, the studio behind my first directorial venture, “Monkey Man.” Not only did I direct this project, but I also penned the script and took on the lead role.

As a fervent enthusiast, I’d characterize this exhilarating venture as a fusion of blood-pumping revenge and adrenaline-fueled action, drawing parallels to the spirit of Braveheart and the relentless prowess of John Wick. However, it also echoes the grandeur of King Arthur’s courtly tales, with its unique blend of Medieval chivalry and the rich tapestry of feudal India.

In the year 1300, the story unfolds around a shepherd who embarks on a vengeful crusade against a band of rogue knights who devastated his village. As events unfold, it becomes clear that this ordinary shepherd is anything but ordinary.

5th Season, both funding and producing this project, first collaborated with Will Dunn, a writer for Marvel Studio’s Ms. Marvel. This project quickly gained momentum and was recognized as one of the top unproduced screenplays on the 2023 Black List, an annual compilation of highly sought-after scripts.

In Patel’s adaptation, the original Italian setting is replaced with a vividly colorful and somewhat mystical India as the new backdrop for the characters. Additionally, the production team aims to kickstart a series of films by debuting this feature.

Thunder Road is skilled at crafting engaging revenge and action series, with their label backing the blockbuster John Wick films. This productive studio also boasts the intense Sicario trilogy and will release the action film Fight or Flight, starring Josh Hartnett, in cinemas this May.

Firth Season’s film division, under the leadership of Christopher Slager, creates, finances, markets, and releases a diverse collection of films. This ranges from comedies like “80 for Brady” and “The Book Club,” to action films such as Michael Bay’s “Ambulance” and David Ayer’s “A Working Man,” as well as critically acclaimed productions like “Flora & Son” and “The Lost Daughter” directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal. The next project on their schedule is the comedy “Friendship,” featuring Paul Rudd and Tim Robinson, which will be released by A24 on May 9th.

Patel’s first directorial effort was also an action-packed revenge thriller, set in contemporary India. The film, titled Monkey Man, revolves around a character seeking retribution against the man who murdered his mother many years ago by disguising himself and infiltrating a nightclub. Last year, Universal Pictures released this gripping tale.

Patel, who last starred in British drama Rabbit Trap, is repped by CAA, Curtis Brown, and Sol22.
