Devil's Purge, the upcoming AR FPS, reveals new features at Gamescom

  • Devil’s Purge is an AR game mixing Pokémon Go and Doom
  • We’ve had our eyes on it for a while, and the devs announced key new features at Gamescom
  • It includes featured indie metal bands producing some of the soundtrack, and new geolocation features

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for all things metal and AR, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of Devil’s Purge – a game that promises to blend the best of Pokémon Go and Doom. Having attended numerous gaming conventions over the years, I’ve learned to be cautious about grand promises made at such events. However, the recent announcement at Gamescom has certainly piqued my interest.

Indeed, even with Gamescom concluded, there’s still news emerging that got overshadowed by the deluge of major announcements. One game I’ve been keeping an eye on is Devil’s Purge. It’s a game that has caught my attention for some time now. In essence, it places you in a battle against demonic entities, blending elements of Pokémon Go and Doom, as the developers themselves put it.

At Gamescom, the developers unveiled that they had enlisted two independent metal bands for their soundtrack. The initial bands disclosed are Men Eater and ZERO MASSIVE. However, developer Ontop Games hinted at more bands joining the lineup in the future.

Additionally, some exciting geolocation and time-based features have been unveiled for this AR game. The real-world surroundings significantly impact in-game occurrences here, so be prepared to encounter various demons that change based on the hour or location. You can choose to save these encounters for later or perform an exorcism immediately.

Although I’ve often expressed a desire to create a game beyond the typical gacha or match-3 format, Ontop is one of the studios truly backing up their words. Developing an AR game is challenging even under ideal circumstances, considering the intricate technology involved, especially in today’s world. Still, I find myself rooting for this unique game to thrive, not only because it could fill the vacant heavy metal gaming niche left by Metal: Hellsinger, but also because it offers something fresh and exciting.
