Dexter: Original Sin Creator Clyde Phillips Explained Why They Decided To Create A Prequel, And It Makes So Much More Sense To Me Now

As a long-time fan of the dark and twisted world of Dexter, I must say I was initially skeptical when I heard about yet another addition to the franchise. With the explosive ending of New Blood, I thought we’d finally seen the last of our favorite serial killer. But then came the announcement of Dexter: Original Sin – a prequel that delves into Dexter’s origins as a young man grappling with his dark urges.

Below you’ll find details that reveal plot points for both Dexter and Dexter: New Blood. If you haven’t yet watched Dexter: Original Sin, you can stream it when it debuts on Paramount+ on December 13, or catch it live on Showtime on December 15.

If you’ve found yourself here, it’s likely you have some familiarity with the series Dexter and its sequel, Dexter: New Blood. You might also be aware that there were times when it seemed like Dexter’s story had come to an end, but then news of Dexter: Original Sin emerged, promising to continue the epic saga. Initially, I was puzzled about why a prequel appeared to be the logical next move. However, creator and showrunner Clyde Phillips soon clarified this for me – and now, it all seems so clear.

Should you require a reminder, Dexter is a series that focuses on the character Dexter, who works as a blood splatter analyst for the Miami Police Department during the day, but secretly carries out murders at night to fulfill his own twisted desires. This highly acclaimed Showtime show ran for eight seasons and has since produced a spin-off series titled “Dexter: New Blood.” The latest addition to the franchise is “Dexter: Original Sin,” which delves into Dexter’s origins, exploring his early killings, family dynamics, and more.

Despite being a longtime fan of the series “Dexter”, I found myself wondering about the necessity of “Dexter: Original Sin” given that the climactic finale of “New Blood” appeared to provide a satisfying conclusion to Dexter’s story. However, in discussions with Clyde Phillips regarding the production of “Original Sin”, it was revealed that the original intention had been to create a sequel to “New Blood”. Yet, due to the collaboration with individuals at Paramount, particularly Chris McCarthy from the highly successful “Yellowstone” franchise, they opted instead to produce a prequel.

It turns out it was McCarthy who requested one:

It’s an intriguing query. New Blood was a standalone series and was Showtime’s most successful production ever, prompting them to greenlight a follow-up immediately. My writing team and I penned all ten episodes of the sequel for Showtime, specifically for Gary Levine. However, Chris McCarthy from MTV Entertainment and Paramount took charge and stated that he’s not interested in sequels; instead, he focuses on Yellowstone, 1883, and 1923. Interestingly enough, I was a big fan of all these shows at the time, having watched them all. And then, he challenged me to develop a prequel concept within the next ten days!

It’s amazing to think about spending ten days in Yellowstone, given its vast size and enduring popularity. For decades, Yellowstone has captivated audiences with numerous series, even after Kevin Costner departed from the original production. The prequels have been impressive and skillfully written, making it understandable that Phillips would choose to explore this prequel route if he had a respected executive producer like McCarthy on board.

The showrunner shared with me that he simply needed to gather a group of people and develop a plot for the prequel, which was an idea the boss enthusiastically embraced from the start. This is why the new series eventually got off the ground.

After discussing with some friends, I presented the concept of the show to Chris and Gary in a meeting. When I concluded, Chris responded positively by saying, ‘Exceptional! Let’s move forward.’ Those four words were music to my ears. Immediately, I gathered my writing team again and we brainstormed on how to approach the storyline of Original Sin.

Speaking of myself, I’ve rewatched the series Dexter numerous times, even though its original conclusion is debatable (let’s leave it at that). The show remains captivating, and I continue to enjoy following the narrative unfold. What particularly intrigues me now is delving into Dexter’s past and understanding how he evolved into the character we all know from the beginning of Dexter.

In the beginning of “Dexter: Original Sin,” he’s not the seasoned, slick murderer we’re familiar with. Instead, he’s a young man, still finding his way in life and struggling to manage his inner killer instinct – and I completely get why Phillips chose this approach. It’s fascinating to watch an antihero like Dexter evolve into the character we recognize today, so count me in!
