As a devoted Dexter fan who has spent countless hours dissecting every intricate detail of this dark and captivating series, I can confidently say that the news of not one but two new installments in the Dexter franchise has sent me into a frenzy of excitement! The prospect of delving back into the world of our favorite serial killer, all thanks to the influence of Yellowstone, is nothing short of extraordinary.
Fans of Dexter are in high spirits these days, given the arrival of “Dexter: Original Sin” and the announcement that “Dexter: Resurrection” will premiere in June 2025. After a three-year hiatus, it seems our beloved vigilante serial killer has made a comeback, and interestingly enough, we have the successful TV show “Yellowstone” to thank for “Original Sin,” as this wasn’t the direction creator Clyde Phillips had initially envisioned.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly about the Dexter prequel series, Phillips initially thought that was the end for the character after he was left for dead, shot by his son Harrison in the finale of Dexter: New Blood. However, due to the finale becoming the most-watched episode ever on Showtime, executives quickly demanded another sequel. Then, before Phillips could finish writing all 10 episodes, a significant change occurred because of Yellowstone and its two spin-offs.
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I had the pleasure of penning all ten episodes for the sequel. However, just when we were about to embark on this exciting journey, Chris McCarthy from MTV Entertainment and Paramount stepped into the picture and shared an intriguing perspective: “I’m not in the sequel business; I’m in the prequel business.” This came as a surprise since he had already masterminded the prequels for Yellowstone, specifically 1883 and 1923. With that, Chris posed a challenge: “Can you come up with a prequel in just two weeks?” Quite a task, but one I was eager to tackle!
In a hurry, Phillips swiftly brainstormed an idea and promptly produced “Dexter: Original Sin” to satisfy the budget holders. This prequel unfolds 15 years before the initial series, tracing the life of young Dexter Morgan as he juggles his post-college internship at Miami Metro while secretively concealing his Dark Passenger from his peers, except for his father.
Original Sin, initially given swift approval, was sped through production so much that Phillips admitted he just wrapped up things a couple of weeks ago. In fact, he shared with EW that he’s still in the process of editing it. So far, the outcome has been impressive, as despite airing only one episode, it’s being praised by many for its nostalgic feel reminiscent of the original Dexter series, rekindling the enchantment that initially won our hearts.
‘Dexter: Original Sin’ is Filled With Easter Eggs
Upon initially watching “Dexter: Original Sin,” longtime viewers will recognize that the storyline of the premiere episode references a flashback from Season 1, Episode 3 of the original show, where we caught a brief glimpse of Dexter’s first murder. The “Original Sin” episode builds upon this, while also reintroducing us to characters we’re fond of, now played by a new cast, with Patrick Gibson stepping into the role of the title serial killer.
Phillips mentioned that the fun will continue to grow as we delve deeper into “Original Sin“. As we progress, we’ll start noticing subtle details that will evoke a profound sense of nostalgia in us. He likened it to saying, “‘If you enjoy finding Easter eggs, this show is like an Easter egg hunt,’” he remarked.
It’s incredibly enjoyable! We’ll finalize a script, and someone might suggest adding a small detail that could potentially excite our audience. In such cases, we eagerly comply with their suggestion.
