As a film enthusiast with a soft spot for dark, twisted tales and a deep appreciation for the intricate world of Dexter, I find myself both excited and intrigued by the upcoming prequel, Dexter: Original Sin. The prospect of delving into Dexter’s early days, his formative years under his father’s guidance, promises to offer a unique perspective on the character that we haven’t seen before.
The world surrounding the popular TV show “Dexter” expands further, following the announcement of a prequel titled “Dexter: Original Sin.” This spinoff delves into the formative years of Dexter, shedding light on the origins of his compulsion to kill. Set 15 years prior to the original series, “Original Sin” will chronicle Harry Morgan’s role in shaping Dexter’s unique code – that he should only eliminate individuals who truly deserve it. In addition, this prequel will introduce fresh characters to the mix, as Sarah Michelle Gellar and Patrick Dempsey are set to play significant roles in the series, as hinted by newly-released images.
In this new version, we no longer see Michael C. Hall portraying Dexter, as it’s a prequel set over a decade ago and he continues to narrate the series. Taking on the role of the future serial killer is Patrick Gibson, who gained fame from Netflix’s Shadow and Bone. Alongside him are familiar faces, such as Sarah Michelle Gellar and Patrick Dempsey, who have significant roles in the upcoming prequel. Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we now have our first glimpse of what these characters will look like in the series. Viewers might be surprised if their last encounter with Dempsey was on Grey’s Anatomy.
First Look at Patrick Dempsey & Sarah Michelle Gellar in Dexter: Original Sin
In this new series, Dempsey assumes the character of Captain Aaron Spencer from Miami Metro Police’s homicide division. On the other hand, Gellar portrays Tanya Martin, the Chief of CSI. It’s worth noting that Dempsey has previously played roles in law enforcement, including a detective in the Scream series and a sheriff in 2023’s Thanksgiving. The show is set in the 1990s, allowing both actors to experiment with hairstyles and appearances different from those they might wear today. Interestingly, Dempsey’s mustache in this role is genuine, although it wasn’t originally intended as part of the character’s look.
I stumbled upon this unexpectedly while on vacation. I hadn’t shaved for a while, and as we were about to return home, I decided to keep my mustache instead of shaving off my entire beard. I was inspired by old training videos of Miami police from the ’70s, who all sported mustaches. My long hair added to the vintage look when I slicked it back. I shared a picture with makeup and hair department, and they appreciated the idea – that’s how this style came about.
In regards to Gellar, she describes her character as serving a humorous function, yet this humor unintentionally imparts valuable lessons about what it means to be an effective murderer to Dexter, making him more proficient in his craft.
It’s entertaining, in an unintentional way, to serve as the mentor who guides Dexter in becoming an effective serial killer without realizing that I am contributing to his crimes.
As a die-hard fan of Dexter, I must admit, these new characters we see aren’t part of the original series. This could mean trouble for them, but let’s hope they find a way to move on or change jobs instead of meeting an untimely end. The suspense is killing me! But fear not, the wait won’t be too long as we’ll soon find out their fate.
