Diane Delano, ‘Northern Exposure’ and ‘Popular’ Actress, Dies at 67

As a longtime fan of Diane Delano‘s captivating performances, I am deeply saddened by her passing at the age of 67. From her memorable roles as Officer Barbara Semanski on Northern Exposure to her unforgettable portrayal of Bobbi Glass on Popular, Diane brought an undeniable energy and wit to every role she played. Her ability to own a room with her earthy and raucous presence was truly one-of-a-kind.

Actress Diane Delano, best known for her roles as Officer Barbara Semanski in CBS’ ‘Northern Exposure’ and Bobbi Glass, the stern science teacher on The WB’s ‘Popular’, passed away at the age of 67.

On Friday, Delano passed away at her home in Sherman Oaks following a battle with cancer. Her friend, Stepfanie Kramer, confirmed the news.

Kramer remarked, ‘She had a commanding presence and a quick, clever sense of humor. Her unique comedic delivery made every part she played shine. With her down-to-earth and boisterous personality, she could fill any space with her charm.’ She was truly extraordinary.

Delano had a romantic involvement with Douglas Brackman Jr., played by Alan Rachins, during the second season of NBC’s “L.A. Law” in 1987. Later on, she made appearances in various other television shows such as “Falcon Crest”, “Cop Rock”, “Step by Step”, “Third Rock From the Sun”, “ER”, “Monk”, “Six Feet Under”, “Cold Case”, “The Bridge”, “2 Broke Girls” and “PEN15”.

Delano appeared in 12 episodes throughout the last four seasons (1991-95) of the TV show “Northern Exposure,” set in Alaska, portraying Officer Semanski. He also stood out as a tough and masculine teacher named Glass on Ryan Murphy’s series “Popular” for 36 episodes during its two-season span (1999-2001).

She played lots of cops and authority figures.

Delano hails from Los Angeles, born on January 29, 1957. He shares a family connection with Myrtland Vivian LaVarre, a New York stage actor who was persuaded by Cecil B. DeMille to adopt the name John Merton and relocate to Hollywood.

Growing up, one of my uncles transformed into the gritty actor Lane Bradford. Frequently, he’d bring me and our cousins behind-the-scenes at his movie sets. Those early studio visits sparked a deep passion for the industry within me, as my cousin Rick Sparks observed. It wasn’t just genetics; those experiences solidified my love for this world.

Delano began her acting journey at the tender age of six, and after completing her studies at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts/West, she made her on-screen debut in 1983. Her first appearance was on NBC’s “St. Elsewhere” and in the movie “Heart Like a Wheel”, where she portrayed the sister of Bonnie Bedelia’s character Shirley Muldowney.

Throughout her over four-decade-long acting career, Delano has been featured in various films such as “Ratboy” (1986), “A Mighty Wind” (2003), “The Wicker Man” (2006) where she played the character Sister Beech with a snarky attitude, “Miracle Mile” (1988) and “The Ladykillers” (2004).

She lent her voice to Big Barda in the series ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold’, as well as the superhero character Pantha in ‘Teen Titans’. Additionally, she appeared on the soap operas ‘Days of Our Lives’ and ‘Fumbling Thru the Pieces’.
