The legendary duo of the Hindi film industry, Dilip Kumar and Madhubala, who starred together in the classic movie Mughal-e-Azam, ended their romantic relationship after a period of dating. Later, Dilip Kumar married Saira Banu. Lately, actress Mumtaz has shared insights on their separation, asserting that Madhubala was unable to have children, which led to the end of their relationship.
During a chat with Vickey Lalwani, Mumtaz shared insights about the demise of Dilip Kumar and Madhubala’s relationship, mentioning that “It wasn’t Madhubala who ended things. Instead, Dilip Kumar chose to part ways because she couldn’t bear children. Later, he wed Saira Banu, a truly kind individual.
She mentioned that Saira meticulously looked after him during his final days, emphasizing that despite the significant difference in their ages, it was their shared love that made their connection meaningful.
Mumtaz disclosed that Madhubala had opened up to her about a heartache she endured. She divulged that the actress held a deep affection for Dilip Kumar, whom she fondly referred to as Yusuf.
Mumtaz shared that Madhubala had confided in her that learning about her severe heart condition which posed risks during pregnancy and childbirth dramatically altered her life. She speculated that Madhubala’s desire for a child could have factored into Dilip Kumar’s choice to wed Saira Banu instead.
Mumtaz also mentioned that she understands Dilip Kumar’s choice, believing that the longing for children is a natural feeling. She suggested that despite his deep affection for Madhubala, he too yearned for a family and eventually wed Saira Banu. Mumtaz expressed her sadness that even with Saira, he did not have any children.
For those unfamiliar, Madhubala and Dilip Kumar had a prolonged romance, spanning many years. During this time, they appeared together in several timeless films such as Tarana, Amar, and Sangdil. Regrettably, their romantic relationship did not result in marriage.
Later in life, the renowned actress Madhubala wed the well-known singer Kishore Kumar, however, their happiness was short-lived as her health began to decline. Tragically, she died young at the age of 36 in 1969.
