Recently, much like many others, Steve Bannon has been vocally advocating for the unveiling of the Epstein documents, fiercely criticizing the late financier as a global predator who preyed on children and demanding complete transparency. However, it seems that Bannon’s opinions towards Epstein weren’t always so negative.
In 2019, even with mounting media scrutiny and ongoing investigations leading up to his arrest on sex trafficking charges at Teterboro Airport, and with most of Jeffrey Epstein‘s associates having already distanced themselves from the 66-year-old, Steve Bannon remained a loyal ally. The disheveled former Trump advisor is said to have provided guidance to Epstein secretly, participated in strategy discussions, and ultimately orchestrated a covert media overhaul. This involved setting up a series of recorded conversations at Epstein’s Manhattan residence, with Bannon acting as an intermediary in these sessions.
The scene resembled a documentary production – a compact team, sophisticated lighting, and Bannon posing tough, interrogative questions from behind the camera. These sessions appeared to be preparations for a potential image transformation interview with a renowned news outlet like 60 Minutes, with Bannon taking on the role of Mike Wallace. However, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Epstein might have covered all expenses, casting doubt over who legally owns the footage.
The interview didn’t happen due to some challenging PR issues, but for several months now, Bannon has been touting footage he made of his former friend as the base for an upcoming docuseries titled “The Monster.” He’s been marketing it as investigative journalism, offering a gritty insight into Epstein’s psyche. However, it appears that these recordings were not at all journalistic in nature.
Michael Wolff, who initially disclosed the existence of these tapes in his 2021 book “Too Famous“, and who had access to the first recording as well as transcripts of others, claims that the purpose wasn’t to expose anything. Instead, it was about shaping public perception or “spin”. He explains to THR, “The tapes were undoubtedly used for media training.” It is also unlikely, according to him, that Epstein would have consented to these recordings being utilized in a documentary.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that when it comes to the Epstein scandal, my personal connection – what some are calling his financial dealings with Epstein, his alleged coaching role, and the purpose of those videos – has been curiously missing from my own public statements for quite some time now. In fact, I’ve been one of the loudest voices criticizing the administration for their reluctance to disclose the Epstein files.
Steve Bannon, who failed to respond to multiple calls and emails, has previously disputed Wolff’s narrative and allegations concerning his relationship with Epstein. However, regarding the release of the Epstein tapes, he’s been less clear over the past five years, brushing off questions about their location. Then, in March last year, he made an appearance on The Jimmy Dore Show and discussed the videos for the first time, suggesting he was working on a documentary series featuring them — possibly for Netflix or another streaming platform. “Epstein is a creation of the elite,” Bannon stated, implying that much of what’s been revealed about him is not entirely accurate.
To put it simply, Steve Bannon’s recent criticisms of Jeffrey Epstein contradict the close friendship they had, according to author Michael Wolff. He states that Bannon and Epstein became friends around 2017, shortly after Bannon left the White House, and remained in contact until Epstein’s death in August 2019. During this period, Wolff says, Bannon frequently visited Epstein’s homes in Manhattan and Paris, and the two men communicated daily. Given their shared background on Wall Street, love for luxury, and complex relationship with Donald Trump, their friendship was not unexpected. Bannon’s falling out with Trump occurred shortly after the release of Wolff’s book “Fire and Fury,” where he was rumored to be a significant source.
Years passed since the alleged prison-cell suicide of Epstein before Bannon publicly shifted his stance on him. By that time, I was embroiled in my own legal issues, convicted in 2022 for contempt of Congress and sentenced to four months in prison in 2024.
After serving my sentence last year, I’ve managed to carve out a niche as a MAGA influencer with a popular podcast (Bannon’s War Room) and numerous sold-out public appearances. However, the Epstein scandal has resurfaced, and I’ve faced backlash from fellow MAGA supporters demanding the release of the tapes. At a Turning Point USA event in July, Representative Anna Paulina Luna called on me to disclose my own Epstein documents, and the crowd, known for their directness, cheered in agreement.
I didn’t respond to repeated requests for comment regarding this story.
Regarding the tapes, Wolff claims he doesn’t know where they are currently located, hinting that Bannon might not even own them. He adds that if any footage still exists, it would technically belong to Jeffrey Epstein or his estate. According to Wolff, he had separate discussions with both Epstein and Bannon about the tapes, and these conversations were primarily about media training. Wolff believes that Epstein wouldn’t have permitted the tapes to be used in a documentary format due to their raw and revealing nature.
If the tapes were still available, Wolff asserts, Bannon might not have control over them. Instead, according to him, these tapes, along with the rest of Epstein’s billionaire estate, would likely be in the hands of Epstein’s co-executors – attorney Darren Indyke and accountant Richard Kahn, who are based in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The lawyers did not respond to repeated attempts to contact them via phone calls or emails.
Wolff expresses fondness for Steve, praising his intelligence, but also labels him as extremely opportunistic, a trait he has encountered throughout his lifetime of meeting such individuals. Bannon, Wolff suggests, is capitalizing on the Epstein controversy in his pursuit to lead the MAGA movement. However, Wolff also mentions that Bannon recognizes the files will never be released because, if they were, Bannon would be the primary focus due to his frequent email exchanges with Epstein.
