As a seasoned movie enthusiast and follower of the industry for decades, I must say I am both intrigued and saddened by the turn of events surrounding Vasan Bala’s film, Jigra.
The movie “Jigra,” starring Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina, directed by Vasan Bala, didn’t do well at the cinema. Recently, the director defended the film’s poor box office performance in an interview, which led to varied reactions online. In the midst of this controversy, Bala has chosen to deactivate his X account.
In an unexpected twist, I eagerly waited for the premiere of the highly anticipated film, Jigra, starring Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina on October 11, 2024. To my disappointment, it didn’t live up to expectations at the box office. Following the film’s underperformance, director Vasan Bala chose to deactivate his social media account X, after facing scrutiny from internet users over his defense of its failure.
On Sunday, the 20th, Vasan’s previously active social media account has been removed, leaving only empty spaces where his old tweets and replies used to be. Now, when you click on these posts, they lead to nowhere and display a message saying, “This post is from an account that no longer exists.” Similarly, a notice appears on his profile reading, “This account does not exist. Try searching for another.

In response to Vasan’s remark about the Jigra’s flop, netizens began labeling him as ‘overconfident’ due to his unwillingness to acknowledge the movie’s poor performance. Once the account was taken down, numerous users supported Bala, arguing that he should not be solely blamed for the film’s underperformance.
For those unfamiliar, Vasan shared with The Hollywood Reporter that life has been challenging following the movie’s premiere. He openly acknowledged that releasing his films has always been a struggle, but this time was particularly difficult due to the grand scale of release. Despite the film’s success, he expressed uncertainty about how to handle it. The director underlined the pressure that comes with aiming for box-office success in mainstream cinema.
He mentioned that the unexpected outcome was disappointment because one doesn’t intentionally aim for failure. Additionally, this movie wasn’t defiant or rigid in its approach; rather, it was straightforward and easy to understand. He described it as a universally relatable film. In conclusion, he acknowledged that he had let down producers Karan Johar and Alia Bhatt with the film’s outcome.
The movie starring Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina follows a narrative about a sibling’s rescue mission when their brother is incarcerated abroad. Notably, Manoj Pahwa played a pivotal part in this tale set against the backdrop of a daring prison escape.
