- The Relationship Between Sofia and Strange
As an ardent fan of superhero tales and a connoisseur of the darker corners of Gotham City, I must say that The Penguin miniseries is proving to be quite the captivating spectacle on Max. Two episodes in, and it’s already leaving fans and critics alike spellbound with its stylish revisitation of Gotham City and the rise of Oswald Cobblepot.
It appears that everyone is appreciating Lauren LeFranc’s portrayal of The Penguin on Max. The eight-episode miniseries, focusing on Oswald Cobblepot, or Oz Cobb as he’s known here, has garnered positive responses from both critics and fans after only two episodes have aired. The initial episode offered a stylistic comeback to Gotham, with Sofia Falcone being released from Arkham Asylum and an event at the end that sets Oz on a course for absolute power. The latest installment hints at a familiar Batman character straight from the comic books, but under a different name.
If you’re fond of superhero series, you might recall Theo Rossi as Hernan “Shades” Alvarez from Netflix’s Luke Cage. In a different role, he appears in Inside Man (episode 2 of The Penguin) as Dr. Julian Rush, a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum who subtly manipulates and seduces Sofia. Batman enthusiasts are quick to speculate that this character shares striking similarities with the semi-altered Doctor Hugo Strange, based on his chilling initial portrayal.

Initially, Rush is found administering what seems like hypnosis treatment on Sofia. A series of small red beacons lead Carmine Falcone’s daughter back to Arkham, where she engages in a conversation with her deceased brother. In a touching gesture of family unity, Alberto touches the glass partition between them. However, his severed, grisly pinky finger causes Sofia to get trapped in a recurring sequence of Alberto’s death. This distress triggers Rush to rescue her. Before concluding their session, there is a suggestive moment of tender embracing, hinting at Rush crossing boundaries that are unusual for a medical professional interacting with his patient.
Delving deeper into the original comic book character, Rush, similar to Hugo Strange, may share certain traits. Originally appearing in a 1940s edition of Detective Comics, Hugo Strange was notorious for capturing Gotham’s famous hero, Batman, and subjecting him to harsh treatment by hanging him upside down and whipping him relentlessly. Although it has been confirmed that Batman won’t feature in The Penguin, there are swift connections emerging between the character and the show.

In an unusual twist, Todhunter often uses pseudonyms, such as Dr. Todhunter in the 1970s. He orchestrated the release of colossal monster-men on the Falcone estate as a way to wipe out his debt and conceal any ties between them. Additionally, he joined forces with the Penguin (and Two-Face) to gain control over the genetic makeup of every citizen in Gotham City. This villain, versed in various sciences like psychiatry and chemical biology, has been a recurring character across multiple Batman-related platforms. Over time, this criminal mastermind has developed an intriguing fascination with Batman’s resilient psyche. Similar to Max’s Penguin, this fixation appears to have shifted towards Sofia Falcone.
It’s clear that the events involving Julian Rush so far are merely a hint of the chilling things yet to unfold. Sofia certainly has a lot on her plate (both emotionally and mentally speaking, considering she’s a psychopathic serial killer), but we can expect Rush to pose a formidable threat to Oz and his endearing affection for his mother. We’ll have to tune in each week to find out more. Starting this Sunday and running until November 10, you can catch new episodes of The Penguin on Max.
