As an old-school movie buff who has seen his fair share of films from the golden age of Hollywood, I must say that “Three Men and a Baby” is a timeless classic that still brings a smile to my face. While some may be spooked by the urban legend of a ghostly apparition in one scene, I can assure you it’s nothing more than a cleverly placed cardboard cutout of Ted Danson in a tuxedo.

It’s said in local folklore that a tragedy occurred in the very home where this scene was captured on film. Reports suggest that a young lad lost his life there, either by his own hand or some other cause, leading to the house being deserted by its original inhabitants. The eerie apparition in this shot is believed to be the spirit of that boy, reaching out from the afterlife to touch those who watch the film.
But Is It Really a Ghost?
Let’s cut right to the truth. No, Three Men and a Baby did not capture the ghost of a dead child. So then what did we see in that creepy shot? The answer is actually pretty funny: it’s a cardboard cutout of Ted Danson’s character, Jack, wearing a tuxedo and a top hat. The cutout was created for a dog food commercial that Jack, an actor, was supposed to appear in during the film. But this storyline was removed from the movie’s final cut.
In this scene featuring Jack and his mother, an unintended prop – a miniature cardboard cutout of Danson wearing a top hat – was mistakenly included. Upon closer inspection, Danson’s face can be clearly discerned. The camera angle creates the illusion that the cutout is much smaller than its actual size, giving it the appearance of a small boy figure.
Although its storyline was removed, the cutout does appear in a later scene. Jack is standing in front of a window, looking out at New York City, when we see the humorous cardboard cutout standing there to his left. Still think we’re wrong about this and believe the house is haunted? Well, the joke’s on you because this scene wasn’t even filmed in a real house. All the interior shots in Three Men and a Baby were filmed on a sound stage in Toronto.

The comedy film “Three Men and a Baby” was an unprecedented box office sensation for Disney, earning over $100 million domestically, being the highest-grossing movie of 1987, and holding the record as Disney’s most profitable film at that moment in time. It was surprising to many that this movie would eventually become Disney’s top earner. The film’s massive success spawned a franchise consisting of a sequel titled “Three Men and a Little Lady,” a 2012 TV series adaptation called “Baby Daddy,” and plans for a third film, “Three Men and a Bride.” However, the third movie was ultimately abandoned. Selleck, Guttenberg, and Danson had agreed to reprise their roles, but the project was eventually scrapped.
Don’t worry, lovers of “Three Men and a Baby”, Disney has no intention of letting this franchise go just yet! They’ve announced that they will be rebooting the movie, which is set to premiere exclusively on Disney+ in 2020. The remake will star Zac Efron alongside a diverse cast, and it will honor the original film by including cameo appearances from Selleck, Guttenberg, and Danson. Additionally, they might even address the urban legend surrounding the original movie!
