Did You Know Imtiaz Ali rewrote Rockstar ‘from memory’ after losing script; filmmaker recalls how Ranbir Kapoor insisted on working in it

As a devoted cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of Bollywood over the past decade and more, I must say that the tale of Imtiaz Ali and Ranbir Kapoor‘s encounter is nothing short of cinematic serendipity. The fact that Rockstar, a movie that made both these artists household names, was almost never made, only to be revived years later due to popular demand, is a testament to the power of storytelling and the enduring appeal of great art.

As a diehard fan, I can’t help but gush about one of Imtiaz Ali’s masterpieces that catapulted him to stardom in Bollywood – Rockstar. This critically acclaimed film was so captivating that even after over a decade, it was re-released this year in cinemas due to its enduring popularity. While Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of Jordan was nothing short of spectacular, what many don’t realize is that Ali had already approached the talented actor for another movie long before Rockstar hit the screens.

During an interview with Mid-Day, Imtiaz Ali reminisced about his plans to create the film Rockstar. For unknown reasons, this project didn’t materialize initially. However, discussions and rumors about it persisted within close circles. Eventually, years passed before he resumed work on the story. At a screening event, he happened to meet Ranbir Kapoor. Following a brief encounter at the event, they arranged a meeting, which led to their collaboration on the film.

As a die-hard fan, I found myself standing before the enigmatic Kapoor, clutching a script for another film in my trembling hands. Yet, my heart pounded not for that script, but for the one and only Rockstar. My obsession was so palpable, I dared to ask about it from the man himself, the filmmaker. But my ardor didn’t stop there; I was so immersed in the musical drama that Kapoor began narrating the very tale of Rockstar to the director. Watching him recount the story with such fervor left Imtiaz in awe, convinced that this man was destined for the movie. With a sparkle in his eye, he asked if I’d consider taking on the role, and who was I to deny the universe? Overwhelmed with excitement, I agreed, and Imtiaz ended our meeting by promising to bring me the script of Rockstar.

Initially, the script was lost and could not be found by the director. Consequently, he had to recreate it based on his memory. Imtiaz then stated that he had rewritten it. The 2011 movie featured Nargis Fakhri, Aditi Rao Hydari, Piyush Mishra, Shernaz Patel, Kumud Mishra, Sanjana Sanghi, Aakash Dahiya and Shammi Kapoor in its cast.

For Imtiaz Ali, it was him who directed the hit movie “Amar Singh Chamkila”. Starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, this biographical drama film was made available on Netflix on April 12, 2024. Meanwhile, Ranbir Kapoor is busy shooting for his next venture titled “Ramayana”. This upcoming project is being directed by Nitesh Tiwari, and it also features Sai Pallavi and Yash in significant roles.
