Did you know Jitendra Kumar’s Panchayat holds special connection to RK Narayan’s Malgudi Days? Find out how

The popular show Panchayat, known for its accurate portrayal of rural life in India, will be back for a fourth season on July 2, 2025, exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. Fans are already buzzing with anticipation to revisit the village of Phulera. Interestingly, the director found inspiration for this series from the cherished classic Malgudi Days and its rural setting; interestingly, he chose the name Panchayat as it echoes the title of the famous book series Panchatantra.

Director Deepak Kumar Mishra acknowledges classic Indian TV series like Malgudi Days as a major influence on Panchayat. He hopes to rekindle the audience’s affection for such shows and find ways to make them relatable to today’s reality. Mishra strives to create a storyline that reflects the uncomplicated charm and profound nature of rural life, much like the tale-spinning in Malgudi Days.

At the unveiling of its second season, director Deepak Kumar Mishra explained why the show was named “Panchayat”.

The director expressed, “A panchayat in India symbolizes the very spirit of rural living. My goal was to stir viewers’ nostalgia for timeless series and link that to real life. As children, we were immersed in shows such as Malgudi Days and Panchatantra. They embodied the charm of small-town culture. Our intention was to introduce the modern generation to the TV shows we enjoyed as kids. ‘Panchayat’s title resonates with viewers on a deeper, homeland level.

In this fictitious village of Phulera, located in Uttar Pradesh, the Panchayat is led by Abhishek Tripathi, a recent engineering graduate who takes on the role of secretary. The narrative unfolds as he grapples with the intricacies of rural governance and the nuances of community interactions, providing a mix of comedic relief and poignant scenes.

The new season will delve deeper into the complexities of village governance and interpersonal ties, preserving the show’s distinctive appeal and authenticity. With compelling narratives and outstanding acting, Panchayat remains a remarkable series that authentically portrays life in rural communities.

In July 2025, the next installment of Panchayat will be available on Prime Video. The latest teaser suggests that there’s growing political strife in Phulera, with Pradhan Ji and Bhushan clashing for supremacy. This new season is expected to reveal the destiny of Phulera like no other time before.
