Did you know Lage Raho Munnabhai was first offered to Aamir Khan? The original story of Sanjay Dutt-starrer will stun you

More recently, Aamir Khan has revealed an intriguing backstage account about nearly joining the legendary Munnabhai series. At a press gathering, he delved into the genesis of Lage Raho Munnabhai and admitted that he had initially been given the chance to play the role.

Initially, Aamir Khan shared that Rajkumar Hirani originally presented him with a script for what was initially planned to be the first Munnabhai movie. It’s important to note that the beloved 2003 film Munnabhai MBBS, which introduced Sanjay Dutt as the charming character transitioning from gangster to doctor, hadn’t yet been thought up at that moment.

Initially, the story that Rajkumar Hirani proposed to Aamir Khan went through significant changes, ultimately becoming the 2006 sequel known as Lage Raho Munnabhai. This film is notable for introducing the concept of Gandhigiri to viewers.

Reflecting back, Aamir Khan mentioned that when Rajkumar Hirani approached him with the plot, he disclosed that the initial tale had transformed into Munna Bhai 2, implying he didn’t have another script prepared at that time.

Aamir endorsed the decision, indicating his conviction that the project was ready for a sequel. He demonstrated no remorse over missing out on the movie, instead, he showcased his faith in Hirani’s creative direction.

In the early stages of developing Lage Raho Munnabhai, Khan shared that the original tale centered around a young revolutionary, who sustained injuries from a lathi attack and subsequently slipped into a coma.

Forty to forty-five years after he came to, he discovered India had achieved independence and the world was now in the 1990s, leaving him behind in yesteryears. Not realizing Mahatma Gandhi had departed, he persisted in speaking with him, a conversation that served as the foundation for the initial idea.

As a follower who appreciates the artistry in Indian cinema, I can’t help but acknowledge the profound influence that Aamir Khan’s collaborations with Rajkumar Hirani have had on our cinematic landscape, despite Aamir not joining the Munnabhai series. Their partnership bore fruit in the form of the 2009 blockbuster “3 Idiots,” a film that continues to hold one of the highest grossing positions among Indian films, and the satirical sci-fi drama “PK” in 2014. In the near future, Aamir will be gracing our screens with his presence in the movie “Sitaare Zameen Par.
