As a gamer with a heart for sci-fi and a memory that can recall countless hours spent on the Stargate SG-1 series, I find it utterly fascinating to delve into the hidden gems within these iconic shows. The recent revelation that the voice behind the Unas in Stargate SG-1’s “Thor’s Hammer” was none other than James Earl Jones himself is a testament to the intricate tapestry of talent woven into this beloved franchise.
Despite the sad news that James Earl Jones, a renowned actor who passed away at the age of 93, has left us, his impactful legacy in cinema and television continues. Among many notable performances, he is remembered particularly by science fiction enthusiasts for his iconic roles.
Furthermore, it’s worth noting that while James Earl Jones is well-known for his voice as the villainous Darth Vader in “Star Wars”, he also made a stealth appearance in another cherished “Star” series: “Stargate SG-1”.

James Earl Jones’ Stargate SG-1 Cameo Explained
In Stargate SG-1, we accompanied groups of modern soldiers and adventurers as they journeyed to various planets, fought off malevolent extraterrestrial beings throughout the cosmos, and all this was made possible by the “Stargate,” an ingenious artifact that could establish a portal to any planet with a corresponding gate on the other side.
In the 10th episode of the initial season, titled “Thor’s Hammer,” which was originally broadcast on Showtime (later moving to SYFY during its fifth season), the characters Jack O’Neill, portrayed by Richard Dean Anderson, and Teal’c, played by Christopher Judge, are transported into an undergound cave following their encounter with an alien defense mechanism.
In that location, they encounter an alien being known as an Unas, who is being manipulated by another extraterrestrial species, the Goa’ulds (the primary antagonists throughout most of the series). A significant portion of the episode involves the Unas pursuing O’Neill and Teal’c. You might wonder who lent their voice to the Unas? It was none other than James Earl Jones himself.
If you hadn’t paid attention during the show’s credits, as mentioned by fan site Gateworld, you might have overlooked the brief voice cameo. However, even when disguised as an alien creature, the voice of James Earl Jones was still distinctively his. This was a relatively unknown contribution to the show, but it linked Jones to another massive science fiction series.
The series ‘Stargate SG-1’ is one of the longest-running science fiction franchises still around today. It originally aired from 1997 to 2007, spanning 10 seasons and a total of 214 episodes, along with two accompanying movies. After switching networks to SYFY following its fifth season, it birthed two original spinoff series under the SYFY umbrella – ‘Stargate Atlantis’ and ‘Stargate Universe’.
Stargate creators’ latest show? SYFY’s The Ark
A number of the creative minds behind the “Stargate” series continue to explore the realm of science fiction. Currently, Dean Devlin, who worked on the original “Stargate” film, and Jonathan Glassner, known for “Stargate SG-1”, are overseeing SYFY’s ongoing space-based original series, titled “The Ark“. This show centers around a spaceship crew in search of a new habitable planet following Earth’s demise. However, as one would expect when navigating the perils of space, danger lurks — with half the crew meeting an untimely end in an accident that sets the narrative in motion.
I’m absolutely thrilled that “Ark” recently concluded an action-packed second season! If you missed any episodes or want to rewatch the entire series, you can find it all on Peacock and also in the SYFY app. Enjoy the ride!
