R. Madhavan spoke candidly about taking a hiatus from acting after losing faith in his career. He remembered a specific instance during an outdoor shoot in Switzerland when a local farmer’s contemptuous gaze left a deep impression on him. This encounter affected him profoundly, and he felt offended, leading to his decision to step away and embark on a walking tour of the beautiful Swiss countryside as a means of escape.
During an interview with India TV, actor R Madhavan shared that he had lost his passion for the projects he was involved in, choosing instead to adhere to industry recommendations. These suggestions led him to focus on appealing to audiences in smaller urban areas, such as tier 2 and tier 3 cities.
Actor Shaitaan opened up about taking a break from acting due to his disappointment with the roles he was being offered. He reminisced about an on-set moment during a film shoot in Switzerland, where he found himself donning vibrant orange trousers and a green shirt, executing a dance routine for a Tamil song right in the middle of the road.
While on set, I found myself under the scrutiny of a Swiss farmer, his disapproving gaze and dismaying head shake left me feeling somewhat taken aback. At first, I felt compelled to assert my worth, believing that if this farmer were to visit Chennai, he would come to appreciate my standing.
Yet, it was then that he came to understand he was essentially dancing to others’ melodies, prompting him to reassess his professional decisions.
Madhavan pondered over his diverse abilities and thought there could be more to his life than what he was currently experiencing. He came to understand that while he possessed a variety of skills, he wasn’t fully utilizing them in his movies. Instead, he found himself concentrating on catering to audiences in smaller cities, known as tier 2 and tier 3 locations.
Recognizing it as an error, I understood that there was no need for me to maintain a particular image, since I’ve always been financially secure and my education has never been questioned under any circumstance.
I realized I didn’t need to act a certain way, as I’ve always had financial stability and people have never doubted my education.
One day, his wife observed that he seemed to be working tirelessly, as though trying to flee from it. He acknowledged this, and in contemplation of his situation, decided to leave the field completely.
I abandoned my entire acting schedule, from movie roles to endorsements, and even grew a beard to fit in while wandering. On this journey, I took note of how people, from rickshaw drivers to locals, connected and what held deep significance for them. Madhavan attributes the groundwork for the decisions he makes now to four years of self-reflection.
