Did you know Rishi Kapoor was proud of Ranbir Kapoor’s performance in Imtiaz Ali’a Rockstar? Late actor said, ‘beta toh mera hai’

As a cinephile who has witnessed countless films and performances over the years, I can confidently say that Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of Janardhan Jakhar in Rockstar is undoubtedly one of his finest moments on the silver screen. The film, directed by the brilliant Imtiaz Ali, stands out as a testament to their exceptional collaboration.

Among all the remarkable performances I’ve seen from Ranbir Kapoor, Rockstar stands out as one of my favorites, a masterpiece directed by Imtiaz Ali in 2011. In this film, Nargis Fakhri and I shared the screen, with me portraying the character of Janardhan Jakhar, popularly known as JJ, a musician whose artistry continues to resonate with cinema enthusiasts. Interestingly, his father, the late and legendary actor Rishi Kapoor, took great pride in my performance under Imtiaz’s direction.

In a recent interview Sit with Hit List, journalist Mayank Shekhar, who was in conversation with Imtiaz Ali, recalled an anecdote of receiving calls from Rishi Kapoor. Rishi called him to praise his son, Ranbir Kapoor after the release of Rockstar.

Rishi reached out to the journalist three times over the phone to discuss his critique of the 2011 film, Rockstar. In this review, the critic expressed that since Amitabh Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan, there hasn’t been a performer quite as talented an actor.

The reporter remembered that the deceased actor declared, “He’s my son,” with a sense of pride upon reading the statement.

Imtiaz burst out laughing after hearing the incident.

Later, Imtiaz Ali recounted a story involving Rishi Kapoor from the set of Love Aaj Kal (2009). He reminisced about the time when they both found chicken to be a vegetarian dish and decided to share a meal together on set.

In a reminiscence, the director of Love Aaj Kal shared an anecdote about Rishi Kapoor expressing annoyance when served non-vegetarian food despite asking for something else. Grateful for this chance encounter, the filmmaker cherished the opportunity to dine with the esteemed actor.

As a committed admirer, I’d like to share a bit about my favorite director, Imtiaz Ali. On the professional stage, his first directorial venture was Socha Na Tha in 2005. This film showcased Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia in the leading roles. However, it was his groundbreaking collaboration with Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor in Jab We Met (released in 2007), that truly catapulted him into the limelight.

Imtiaz has been the director behind films such as Rockstar, Love Aaj Kal, Jab Harry Met Sejal, Highway, Tamasha, and most recently, Amar Singh Chamkila. This movie featured Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra in lead roles and was launched earlier this year.

In 2018, he wrote the screenplay for the movie “Laila Majnu,” starring Avinash Tiwary and Triptii Dimri. This film, directed by Sajid Ali, was re-released in cinemas in August of this year.
