The movie “Kya Kehna,” featuring Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta, and Chandrachur Singh, hit the screens in 2000. Despite being released over two decades ago, it still boasts a dedicated fanbase. Interestingly, producer Ramesh Taurani has shared insights about how Chandrachur Singh was initially cast but later dropped from the film, with Salman Khan stepping in. However, it’s worth noting that after Chandrachur refused to part ways with the project, Saif ultimately decided not to proceed with the movie.
In a recent chat with Radio Nasha Official, Ramesh Taurani shared that Mukul Dev and Chandrachur Singh were originally chosen for the film. Unfortunately, Mukul Dev didn’t arrive on set for the first day of shooting. As a result, Saif Ali Khan was brought in at the last minute to fill the role. The movie, produced in 1997, was made during the time when Gulshan Kumar was tragically killed. Interestingly, Taurani was released from prison in 1998 after serving his sentence.
As I looked back then, six films – Albela, Kuwara (twice), Kachche Dhaage, Soldier, and Jab Pyaar Kisi Se Hota Hai – were under production as a diligent follower. However, the seasoned producer I was working with openly acknowledged that among all these projects, it was particularly challenging for us to distribute Kya Kehna due to its limited star power. Subsequently, he shared his struggles with Chandrachur Singh and humbly asked him to reconsider his role in the film so we could more easily find a buyer.
Overwhelmed with excitement, I found myself in complete agreement with Chandrachur’s decision. In the midst of my fervor, Taurani approached Salman Khan, and to my utter delight, he agreed to be a part of our movie! “I don’t need to hear the plot,” he declared, his enthusiasm echoing mine. “Just because you asked me to, I will do it.” However, he insisted on obtaining a letter of consent from Chandrachur first, ensuring that nothing belonging to someone else or cursed would be involved in our project.
Following our conversation, word quickly spread to the media, but Chandrachur Singh chose not to withdraw from this production, deeming it unwise to abandon a Tips-produced project. Later on, Salman instructed Taurani to see the project through with Chandrachur instead.
