As a lifestyle expert who has had the privilege of following the dynamic careers of some of Bollywood’s most captivating stars, I must say that Zero (2018) stands out as a fascinating tale in the annals of Indian cinema. The film, initially titled Katrina Meri Jaan, underwent a significant transformation from its original concept to its final draft – a testament to the creative process and adaptability that is often required in the world of filmmaking.
The 2018 film Zero, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif, didn’t fare well at the box office initially but has since become a favorite among audiences that they can’t help but enjoy, despite its initial flop. Interestingly, not many are aware that the movie was originally titled “Katrina Meri Jaan” and both actors were set to portray dwarfs in double roles. However, through multiple revisions, much of this concept changed, resulting in the final version that we saw in Aanand L Rai’s film.
In an interview with Mumbai Mirror, Kaif shared that the initial script for the movie, which was discussed nearly three years prior to production, had a title “Katrina Meri Jaan.” Originally, both leads were intended to play dual roles, as well as two dwarf characters. However, over time, the script underwent changes and transformations, leading to a film that ultimately fell into a different category and genre.
Initially, Katrina Kaif was intended to portray herself in the film; however, by the time the script was finalized, she assumed the role of a fictional character named Babita Kumari instead. During an interview, Kaif mentioned that director Aanand L Rai had a distinct vision for her character – a struggling actress with self-doubts and traces of sadness, frequently intoxicated and desensitized.
Katrina Kaif, who played Tiger’s character, expressed that even though the movie didn’t succeed at the box office, she thoroughly enjoyed portraying Babita, finding her character to be full of typical movie tropes and stereotypes. She humorously mentioned that it was common for Babita to wander around in boxer shorts with a bottle of vodka in hand during filming. However, while speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Katrina admitted that the shooting experience could sometimes be disheartening for her.
During a pause, Katrina shared that she found serenity. She yearned for a sense of weightlessness and tranquility. Instead, she chose not to delve into her thoughts and confront the feelings of vulnerability, heartache, and sorrow that she harbored within herself. Remarkably, she admitted that she conquered her fears and ventured beyond her safe boundaries, as revealed by Kaif.
Besides Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina, the comedy-drama featured Anushka Sharma, Abhay Deol, R. Madhavan, and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub in significant roles. In addition, many well-known celebrities appeared as themselves in brief cameos within the film titled Zero.
