Did You Know Tom Cruise’s 2017 The Mummy Had 2 Video Game Sequels That Were Actually… Pretty Great?

Throughout the history of on-screen entertainment, there has always been a fascination with tales about mythical monsters that delve into the darkest and abandoned corners of history. These stories often involve ancient curses, hidden tombs, and slumbering supernatural powers waiting to be awakened.

For over a hundred years, Universal Pictures has been creating a thrilling landscape of horror films featuring their collection of Universal Monsters – creatures that stir curiosity about enigmas and conundrums with chilling solutions often requiring confrontation (or evasion) of our deepest fears personified. Tom Cruise assumed the role of the daring explorer in The Mummy, a reimagining by Universal which has become even more enjoyable since its initial theater release in 2017, as you can catch it this month on SYFY (check out the schedule here!).

Not a curse: The Mummy reboot spawned two great video games

In 2017, Universal found it a pity to restrict chilling tales such as “The Mummy” solely to films, so they released two video games alongside the movie. These tie-in titles may not be well known now, but they received critical acclaim for their captivating storylines and immersive atmosphere that perfectly captured the spirit of exploration and eeriness.

Due to the closure of its online server platform, it’s no longer possible for anyone to enjoy “The Mummy: Dark Universe Stories”, a mobile game that required constant internet connection. Developed by WayForward Technologies, this game was set in the universe of Universal Monsters and followed the storyline after the movie events. The game was designed as an expansion of Nick Morton’s (the character played by Tom Cruise) ongoing adventures within the Dark Universe film franchise, which was being promoted at the time.

The related game, “The Mummy Demastered” (developed by Night School), is still accessible to those who have a Steam, Xbox Store, or Nintendo eShop account. This is a 16-bit “Metroidvania” style adventure game where players can gradually uncover more of their surroundings as they traverse. The storyline of “The Mummy Demastered” roughly coincides with the simultaneous happenings in the movie, placing players against undead foes led by the main mummy, Ahmanet (portrayed by Sofia Boutella in the film).

These two games were exceptionally well-received by critics, an unusual occurrence considering movie tie-ins are often perceived as hastily developed additions in the gaming world. Pocket Gamer described The Mummy: Dark Universe Stories as a “fun, well-written adventure” with a chapter-based narrative that they found “witty and well-realized”. On the other hand, GameSpot praised The Mummy Demastered for being a “creative and action-packed adventure” overflowing with “challenging old-school charm”. Remarkably, these weren’t the only positive reviews they received.

Quite impressive, isn’t it? – Especially considering these titles were primarily designed to hold their own amidst the grandeur of “The Mummy”‘s cinematic legacy. And although the games may have fallen into a nearly dormant stage, “The Mummy” is not the type of film franchise to be slowed down by a minor span of supernatural slumber. Join Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella along with Russell Crowe, Jake Johnston, and Courtney B. Vance in “The Mummy”, now airing on SYFY as part of this month’s movie lineup.
