As an ardent admirer of Vijay Varma’s journey in Bollywood, I find his resilience and determination truly inspiring. From being dropped from Sacred Games to waiting for opportunities that finally came with Gully Boy, his story mirrors the ups and downs of a struggling artist. It’s a tale as old as time, filled with rejections, perseverance, and eventual triumph.
Vijay Varma has been experiencing a streak of success following his recent role in IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack (released on August 29, 2024) on Netflix. It’s worth noting that he was originally chosen for the hit series Sacred Games, featuring Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, but eventually had to step away from the project. In his own words, “I took my costume measurements, only to find out I was no longer part of it.
In an interview with Indian Express, actor Vijay Varma discussed his career path marked by numerous auditions to secure acting roles. He recalled a tough phase where he was frequently shortlisted for parts, only to be let go at the last minute, even for Anurag Kashyap’s Sacred Games. “Experiences like that occurred, but there was always a part of me that held on to hope and belief. Opportunities began coming my way after Gully Boy, although I think I grabbed a lot of them because I was so eager for work post the film,” he shared.
Though Vijay Varma had numerous roles and admired performances, it wasn’t until the release of Gully Boy, alongside Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, that he gained widespread recognition. He admitted that acting offers didn’t start coming his way until after the film’s success. Although casting directors saw potential in him, opportunities were slow to appear. Varma also shared that when the opportunity for Darlings presented itself, he initially struggled to imagine himself in that part.
In simpler terms, he expressed that when the opportunity for Darlings came along, he didn’t envision himself playing such a role. Subsequently, he found himself taking on multiple parts where his characters were either cruel or deceitful men. Deep down, he yearned to step away from these roles, but felt unable to do so himself.
Apart from that, he mentioned receiving valuable backing from filmmakers who saw his talent and sought to provide him with novel chances. Consequently, he landed roles in ventures such as Jaane Jaan, helmed by Sujoy Ghosh, which gave him a unique portrayal. Additionally, Homi Adajania selected him for Murder Mubarak, while Anubhav Sinha presented him an opportunity in IC 814.
The Kandahar Hijack web series is based on the book “Flight Into Fear” by Captain Devi Sharan and Srinjoy Chowdhary. This thrilling series marks Anubhav Sinha’s first venture into directing for digital platforms. The series features a talented cast that includes Vijay Varma, Pankaj Kapur, Dia Mirza, Manoj Pahwa, Naseeruddin Shah, and Rajiv Thakur.
This show not only stars Arvind Swamy, Kumud Mishra, Patralekha Paul, and other skilled actors, but it was penned by Adrian Levy and Trishant Srivastava. It made its worldwide debut on August 29 on Netflix, with production credits going to Matchbox Shots and Benaras Mediaworks.
