If you’re the main character in a Star Wars TV series, wouldn’t it be reasonable to retain a production prop? That’s exactly what Diego Luna managed to do after wrapping up Season 2 of Andor, which is slated to air next week for Disney+ subscribers. But let me tell you, getting that blaster home wasn’t a walk in the park. In fact, the actor shared an intriguing tale about how airport security held him up because of the prop, and this happened while he was still nursing a hangover.
Luna, who originally portrayed Cassian Andor in “Rogue One” from 2016, narrated a gripping story during his visit on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” to publicize the second and final season of “Andor”. He mentioned that he received the blaster at the end of the “Star Wars” series filming.
I ventured to the airport, where I exclaimed, “I’m bringing this along as it’d be a shame if I didn’t, given that if I were to ship it…” This piece of work is astonishingly lifelike. It’s so intricately crafted, transporting me straight into a distant galaxy. My adventure at Heathrow’s security checkpoint was unexpected. The officers unveiled the [blaster], and their reaction was priceless, “Whoa, what on earth is that!?” I tried to reach for it to clarify, “Oh, it’s just a prop!”, but the crowd chimed in, “No, no, no! Keep your hands off!
It’s understandable that Heathrow security reacted swiftly when they spotted the blaster, given it resembles a real firearm. Even though it comes from a well-known science fiction series and is inoperable, one can’t presume every agent is familiar with Star Wars lore, hence the potential perceived threat. Diego Luna further explained:
One individual seemed to recognize me, not from Star Wars, but from Narcos. He exclaimed, “Wow, hang on a moment!” Given the chaos and my hangover from the previous night’s festivities, I must admit I appeared rather disheveled, if you take my meaning.
Funny how timing can be so ironic, isn’t it? After a boozy binge, getting cast as Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo in Narcos: Mexico, and having my blaster cause trouble – I found myself in quite a pickle. But luckily, my ties to Star Wars came in handy and managed to sort out this predicament for me. Summing it up, I said:
They instructed me to step outside, to affix my signature on a document, and to display photographs on my phone depicting the character, myself, and me holding the blaster. Notably, there are also toy versions available. Eventually, they understood, however…
It’s quite possible that this airport experience will go down as one of Diego Luna’s most stressful encounters ever, perhaps even becoming his number one stressor in this regard. Given the situation, it might have been more prudent for him to leave the blaster behind, but I can see why he hesitated due to concerns about its potential damage.
Instead, the amusing twist to this story is that, despite all the efforts taken to retrieve it, the blaster isn’t proudly displayed in the Luna household as one might expect, but rather hidden away in a closet.
With Disney+, you can stream the entire Star Wars franchise’s film and TV library at your convenience. The ad-supported plan costs $9.99 per month, while an ad-free experience is available for $15.99 monthly or save 16% by pre-paying $159.99 annually. Check out the deal here!
In the forthcoming weeks starting from Tuesday, April 22, you’ll get to witness Diego Luna brandishing a blaster for the last time in Andor Season 2. The series will unfurl over three episodes each week, concluding on May 13. However, don’t fret, as there are more exciting Star Wars films and TV shows waiting in the wings after that!
