Digimon Story Time Stranger is Your Excuse to Play the Cyber Sleuth Games

In the latest update, while it wasn’t particularly thrilling, we did receive news about Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Stranger. Being a fan of the initial Cyber Sleuth game, I’m glad to see a worthy successor emerging with enhanced graphics. It may not be the most visually stunning game, but I’m more than happy to welcome any high-definition Digimon into my gaming collection.

If you’re eagerly anticipating the launch of Time Stranger, consider adding the Cyber Sleuth collection to your gaming library as well. Initially released on PS4 and PS Vita, these games can now be found in most contemporary game stores. They frequently go on sale, making them an affordable choice. Additionally, they feature engaging turn-based combat.

While it’s true that these games have a peculiar learning curve which may deter some players, dedicated RPG enthusiasts might find the challenge appealing.

Unlike most Pokémon games, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth and its follow-up, Hacker’s Memory, cater to a more mature audience. Players who find the childlike themes of Game Freak’s games less appealing might find these titles more engaging due to their adult content such as semi-revealing female characters, occasional profanity, and horror aspects. Additionally, the games offer witty dialogue that may go over younger players’ heads, which is a bonus for older gamers.

To be honest, these Digimon games don’t delve deeply into dark themes. Instead, they maintain a balance that allows for the display of friendship’s power to aid your character. While some might find the contrast in tone peculiar, consider the near-kiss between Angewomon and Lady Devimon as an example.

From a gameplay perspective, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth follows the standard format of a turn-based Japanese Role Playing Game (JRPG), with certain aspects that seem somewhat outdated. Frequent random encounters are a key feature in this game, prompting players to save frequently and purchase healing items regularly. Your Digimon will display impressive battle animations, but it’s clear that these titles were initially developed for the PlayStation Vita platform.

The unique aspect of these RPGs compared to Pokémon is the ability to augment your party by acquiring additional Digimon. Following a battle with Digimon, players will observe a progress meter increasing. Once this meter reaches 100%, you can cultivate that Digimon through your farming center, providing an endless supply of companions for your team.

Finding new team members may be straightforward, but getting them to transform into your preferred versions can present another challenge. For instance, you desire Patamon to evolve into Angemon. In a typical capture-and-evolve game, all you’d need is time and leveling up for the evolution to occur. However, these are digital creatures, and they have multiple forms to transition through. Some transformations require specific stats to reach a certain value in addition to reaching the right level, which can be disheartening because your Digimon might hit their level cap before achieving that particular stat.

To improve that stat, you’ll need to revert your Digimon back to a more juvenile form and enhance the stats through specialized training routines. You can do all the training in one central location, which makes it less of a hassle, but some players might not want to make Agumon repeatedly attack things just to evolve into Greymon.

Indeed, there’s a significant emphasis on grinding in these video games, and it’s unclear whether Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Hacker’s Memory will address any of these issues. While some enthusiasts might not view this as a drawback due to the satisfaction derived from boosting stats and watching numbers rise, it’s important to note that this leveling system is reminiscent of the PlayStation 1 Digimon World games, meaning the Story series didn’t originate this trend.

What makes Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth games appealing to fans despite being grindy? It’s because they offer a unique challenge, and conquering that challenge becomes incredibly rewarding once you master it – much like the appeal of Soulslike games.

If you’re craving a thrilling, offbeat digital-pet game series that emphasizes the importance of camaraderie, grab Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth collection immediately. The upcoming title, Digimon Story Time Stranger, will be available later this year on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC.
