Dimple Kapadia REVEALS Akshaye Khanna convinced her to do Dil Chahta Hai; veteran actress says 'He was such a sweetheart'

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for Hollywood-esque narratives, I must say that Dimple Kapadia’s career journey is nothing short of a Bollywood blockbuster. From her debut under the legendary Raj Kapoor to her recent role in Murder Mubarak, she has graced our screens for several decades and continues to captivate audiences with her charm and talent.

Dimple Kapadia, who was launched by late legend Raj Kapoor in his 1973 directorial Bobby, has been a part of Hindi cinema for several decades. She was last seen in Murder Mubarak earlier this year. The veteran actress, who played a crucial role in Farhan Akhtar’s directorial Dil Chahta Hai, recently revealed that Akshaye Khanna convinced her to do the 2001 film. Kapadia called her co-star Akshaye a ‘sweetheart’.

In her recent chat with Vogue India, Dimple Kapadia reminisced about her memorable styles from her distinguished acting journey. She admitted that at first, she wasn’t keen on joining Dil Chahta Hai. However, after Akshaye Khanna persistently urged the seasoned actress to take on the role in the 2001 film, she eventually agreed.

The actress from Dil Chahta Hai admitted that she frequently comes up with reasons to avoid making a movie, and at first, she opted to decline the offer.

Akshaye Khanna contacted me. He was really kind-hearted. He asked me to do something for him, and I agreed. It turned out to be a good decision because collaborating with Zoya (Akhtar) and the entire team was an exceptional experience – one that felt like I was working with a different generation altogether, according to Kapadia.

In simpler terms, the 67-year-old actress found it very fulfilling to work alongside a fresh group of actors, and their collaboration significantly benefited her during filming.

Previously, during an interview with Faye D’Souza, Farhan Akhtar revealed that he initially planned to give the character of Akash Malhotra to Akshaye Khanna. However, this role eventually went to Aamir Khan. Later on, Akshaye Khanna was chosen for the part of Siddharth Sinha.

Farhan detailed his encounter with Akshaye and mentioned that he was given the opportunity to play the part of Akash. At the same time, the director also sought out Hrithik Roshan and Abhishek Bachchan for the roles of Sid and Sameer, which were later portrayed by Saif Ali Khan in the film.

In the past, when “Dil Chahta Hai” was being directed, it was recalled that both Hrithik and Abhishek, who were fresh faces at the time, had their own separate agendas. The director, therefore, shared his script with Aamir Khan. Impressed by the challenging nature of the role he was offered, Aamir consented to play Akash as he was known for taking on more serious roles during his career.

In Farhan’s directorial venture, Dimple Kapadia was teamed up with Akshaye Khanna. Kapadia portrayed Tara Jaiswal, a mature woman who is divorced, while he played a younger character. Aamir was matched romantically with Preity Zinta as Shalini in the movie. Saif Ali Khan was cast opposite Sonali Kulkarni as Pooja.

The movie Dil Chahta Hai follows the stories of three friends, Akash, Sid, and Sameer, as they experience major life changes following college graduation. After their graduation celebration, the group spontaneously decides to go on a trip to Goa. Tara, played by Dimple Kapadia, plays a crucial role in their friendship, particularly impacting the relationship between Akash and Sid. Following an argument, Akshaye’s character Sid strikes Akash, leading to a rift between them. In response, Akash moves to Sydney.

In a flight, Akash encounters Shalini, whereas after breaking up with Subodh, Pooja becomes serious with Sameer. Eventually, Sid departs the city because Tara doesn’t return his affection. However, they all gather again when Tara is hospitalized.

In her professional career, Dimple Kapadia has also appeared in films such as Krantiveer, Rudaali, Twist of Love (Pyaar Mein Twist), Ram Lakhan, Chance at Luck, Dabangg, Cocktail, Finding Fanny, Welcome Back, and You Lied, I Cheated (Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar).

Previously wedded to the late film icon Rajesh Khanna, Kapadia is blessed with two daughters – Twinkle Khanna and Rinke Khanna.
