Following the buzz that a fresh installment of the infamous Texas Chainsaw Massacre film could be underway with Glen Powell eyeing the leading role, there has been an update from the potential director linked to the project. Known for his successful sleeper hit Strange Darling which left audiences and critics astounded last year, speculation about JT Mollner’s next venture has run rampant. However, according to him, it might not be Texas Chainsaw Massacre after all.
The latest update on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise reveals that Verve, who’s owned the rights since 2017, is in discussions with potential producers and filmmakers about its future direction. Originating from a 1974 horror masterpiece by Tobe Hooper, the series currently boasts nine films in total. The report suggests that Mollner and producer Roy Lee are among those eager to contribute, with Powell expressing interest in reading Mollner’s as-yet unwritten script. However, following last week’s Deadline article, Mollner has remained cryptic on social media, merely posting a simple message.
Don’t believe everything you read.
Indeed, his comment could be interpreted in various ways. Could he be stating that the report is entirely untrue, and he has no intention of starring in a movie like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre? Or perhaps he does want to star, but the reports about Powell’s enthusiasm might be exaggerated. Alternatively, it could mean that Verve hasn’t yet approached him for such a project, as they stated they are not holding meetings but rather people are approaching them instead.
So far, Verve hasn’t formally presented the property to filmmakers, producers, or potential buyers. Given the intense interest and significance of this horror franchise, offers are being proactively pitched to Verve.
JT Moller’s Next Project Is a Stephen King Classic
At this moment, it’s merely speculation that Mollner will be part of a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre film. However, what we do know for certain is that his upcoming movie is generating a lot of excitement. This upcoming film is directed by Franchise Lawrence, who previously worked on The Hunger Games, and Mollner himself wrote the script for the long-awaited adaptation of Stephen King’s The Long Walk. Filming for this project took place last year and it is now in post-production.
According to the 1979 novel titled “The Long Walk“, the story takes place in a bleak future where one hundred boys are chosen each year for an annual competition. The twist? The winner gets any wish granted for life. The challenge is straightforward yet grueling – they must walk at a consistent pace of four miles per hour without ever stopping. Recently, Mollner expressed his joy about the opportunity to script this story, as he’s been an ardent fan of King’s works for years.
I’m deeply fond of Stephen King and Francis Lawrence as directors, so the opportunity to write and adapt a book in his style for someone like him was simply extraordinary. Being on set and observing how he works, a man with such an impressive portfolio… It feels surreal, truly amazing. He referred to our film as an instant classic, I believe.
There’s no announced release date for “The Long Walk” as of now, but we’ll keep you posted once more information becomes available. On the other hand, the release details for “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” are still uncertain, however, if you’re eager to re-watch the original version, it can be streamed on platforms like Peacock, Tubi, and Amazon Prime Video.
