Dirk Schweitzer Takes Over at Vuelta Germany, Al Munteanu Returns to Production

In a significant leadership reshuffle within the German movie sector, Dirk Schweitzer, who is currently the CEO at film studio MMC, will temporarily assume the role of head at Vuelta Germany – the German branch of Jerome Levy’s Vueleta Group. This move comes as Al Munteanu steps down from his position as CEO.

Previously, Munteanu assumed control at Vuelta Germany following the merger of Telepool, Vuelta’s German distributor and rights company, with his own SquareOne. Now, he is set to manage SquareOne Productions, the production division of SquareOne, which he plans to rename BriskPace Studios. Munteanu continues as a shareholder at Vuelta and will also provide senior counsel.

At Vuelta, Munteanu managed the consolidation and assimilation of the company’s German business units, which encompassed SquareOne, Telepool, and EuroVideo. Additionally, he reorganized Telepool’s international sales branch, Global Screen, within Playtime (Vuelta’s French division). The Vuelta Germany team also negotiated a fresh agreement for bookings and billing with German film distributor Constantin Film for their lineup of theatrical films. The combined Telepool-SquareOne enterprise holds a library of over 1,000 titles tailored for German-speaking Europe, featuring movies like The Imitation Game, Olympus Has Fallen, and the French success Intouchables.

Initially, Al played a key role in designing our strategy for Germany, as Levy stated in a statement. The Vuelta Germany project was crucial in our 2024 acquisition of Telepool and the seamless integration of its operations. Although we will miss his guidance, we celebrate his enthusiasm for production and wish him nothing but the best on his upcoming adventure.

Munteanu expressed great pride in Vuelta Germany’s accomplishments under Jerome Levy’s leadership and is confident in the continued prosperity of this dynamic European production and distribution collective. With my extensive experience in production, sales, and distribution, I see nothing but opportunities during these crucial times for innovative, distribution-focused producers to produce exceptional work across Europe.

Prior to working at MMC, Schweitzer had held prominent roles in various German media companies. He served as the CEO for Splendid Media, a production and distribution company based in Germany, and also worked as the managing director of Tele-München Group. Additionally, he was responsible for program acquisitions and sales at RTL Group, a commercial broadcaster headquartered in Germany.

With backing from private equity, Vuelta has been on a buying spree across Europe, acquiring local production and distribution companies. This includes partnerships with Germany’s SquareOne and Telepoool, who jointly own The Indiana Production & Piper Film Distribution in Italy, France’s Pan, WW Entertainment in the Benelux region, Scanbox Entertainment in Scandinavia, and sales agency Playtime, which encompasses Films Boutique, Film Constellation, Global Screen, and Be for Films.
