Disney+ has been a thriving platform for many of the studio’s prominent franchises like Marvel and Star Wars to expand. However, the formula that works well for live-action projects hasn’t had quite the same success in animation. Recently, Pixar launched “Win or Lose”, a long-awaited production that has received positive feedback. Unfortunately, two major attempts by Walt Disney Animation Studios to extend their successful animated films into ongoing series have failed to materialize. Initially planned as a series, “Moana” evolved into a theatrical sequel. Similarly, the “Tiana” show, which was intended to continue the storyline from “The Princess and the Frog”, will not see the light of day.
The animated series focusing on Tiana, the Disney Princess from “The Princess and the Frog,” was initially announced over four years ago. However, THR reports that this show has now been officially canceled. Moreover, due to a major shift in focus away from long-form content at WDAS, job cuts are anticipated at the Vancouver Disney studio. Regrettably, these events are not unexpected.
It Was Clear Tiana Was Having Problems
It’s only fair to acknowledge that animated projects, regardless of their nature, often require a significant amount of time to mature. However, the extended period without substantial updates on the Tiana series suggested that the project might be encountering certain challenges along the way.
It’s quite unexpected, given the current popularity of “The Princess and the Frog” franchise seems to surpass any previous levels. Compared to other Disney Princess films from the same period like “Tangled” and “Frozen,” the original movie didn’t initially achieve the same level of success. However, Disney decided to introduce Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at both WDW and Disneyland, a decision that cements Tiana as an integral part of Disney for many years ahead.
Last summer, I went to a sneak peek event for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Magic Kingdom before it officially opened. Interestingly, during this presentation, the topic of the Tiana series came up. It was hinted that the narrative of the ride would intertwine with the upcoming series, implying that the project was continuing. However, no specific release date for the show was mentioned.
Tiana Was A Show I Was Looking Forward To
Although it seemed like Tiana‘s production was stuck for a long time, I remained optimistic that it would eventually be released. Re-experiencing The Princess and the Frog through Tiana’s Bayou Adventure has only made me fall in love with this wonderful film even more.
Here’s some exciting news: Although it seems like Tiana has met her end, rest assured that this doesn’t signal the end of the beloved character! While there isn’t a series in production yet, there is an innovative “short-form special” based on the movie under early development. This project is being referred to as “all-new storytelling,” so it appears to be distinct from the previously announced but unsuccessful series. Fingers crossed that it makes it to our screens! In the meantime, why not revisit Tiana’s tale by streaming “The Princess and the Frog” on Disney+?
