Disney+ Is Developing a ‘Holes’ TV Series

A TV series based on Louis Sachar’s Holes is currently in the works over at Disney+.

According to Variety, Disney+ has commissioned a pilot for a new series. Alina Mankin will write and produce the show, with Liz Phang serving as both showrunner and executive producer. Drew Goddard, Sarah Esberg, Mike Medavoy, and Andrea Massaro are also executive producers. Notably, Walden Media, who produced Walt Disney Pictures’ 2003 film adaptation, is returning to produce the pilot. It has been reported that they have been trying to develop a series based on the book for some time now.

In the reinvention of Louis Sachar’s popular 1998 novel, a young woman finds herself in a harsh detention facility. The strict warden compels the inmates to excavate pits, hinting at a secret objective behind their labor.

1998 saw me diving into a book titled after itself, following the journey of a fellow named Stanley Yelnats IV, who found himself shipped off to a Texas desert’s Camp Green Lake – a youth reformatory. Caught up in a web of false accusations for theft, I soon discovered that this desolate camp and my unexpected presence here were intrinsically linked to the stories of its past inmates.

In the 2003 movie, Shia LaBeouf played the main character with Sigourney Weaver, Khleo Thomas, Jon Voight, Tim Blake Nelson, Patricia Arquette, Dulé Hill, and Eartha Kitt also appearing in notable roles.

For most of her life, my mother has been a dedicated schoolteacher. In that role, she’s essentially functioned as an unofficial book scout for Goddard Textiles, as she shared. She’s always seemed to have a knack for knowing what children are interested in, often before others do. ‘Holes’ was the first book she recommended to me – this was during the late 90s – and she firmly believed it would be a massive hit. It’s gratifying to now bring things full circle for Mrs. Goddard and her sixth-grade class.

Goddard commented, “They’ve managed to beautifully convey Louis Sachar’s distinctive essence.” He continued, “Disclosing any more about their plans might ruin the excitement.

Stay tuned for more info on the series.
