Disney Movies Account for 42 Percent of Summer Box Office

As a die-hard movie enthusiast who has witnessed countless summer blockbusters come and go, I must say that this year’s cinematic extravaganza has been nothing short of breathtaking. With Disney leading the charge, we have been treated to an unprecedented display of box office dominance. From the moment “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” roared into our lives, it was clear that this summer would be one for the ages.

During the commencement of this year’s summer movie season, many media headlines focused on the disappointing performances of anticipated blockbusters. However, things took a turn when Disney-owned 20th Century Studios released “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” which had an impressive debut. This kickstarted a streak for Disney, as they went on to break records with the opening of “Inside Out 2” and maintained their success with “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Alien: Romulus.” As a result, Disney has significantly contributed to the earnings from theatrical releases this summer.

As a movie buff, I was thrilled to learn from Fortune’s recent report that Disney movies have solidified their dominance at the summer box office. After the successful global opening of ‘Alien: Romulus’, which earned an impressive $151.5 million worldwide during its first weekend, it’s clear that Disney’s share of the summer box office earnings has grown even more substantial in the last week. With ‘Alien’ adding another $225.4 million to its global total after just its second weekend, it’s no wonder that Disney now holds a staggering 42% of the summer box office pie!

Over the debut weekend of “Romulus”, Disney held the first and second spots at the box office. “Deadpool & Wolverine” came in second, earning $29 million during its fourth week in cinemas. This time around, the films switched places: The newest Marvel movie regained the number one position, collecting $18.3 million, while “Alien: Romulus” took in $16.2 million. To date, “Deadpool & Wolverine” has earned $577.2 million domestically and $1.2 billion worldwide, leaving plenty of potential for further success that will undoubtedly please Disney.

The movie titled “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” ignited Disney’s summer blockbuster season, earning an impressive $58.4 million upon its release in May. Throughout its box office journey, this film demonstrated remarkable staying power for a major release, accumulating a total of $171.1 million in domestic earnings and $397.3 million worldwide. Notably, “Kingdom” surpassed the domestic earnings of 2017’s “War for the Planet of the Apes” ($146.8 million), despite global totals being slightly lower (with “War” grossing $490.7 million globally). However, this indicates that fans remain engaged with the franchise following a trilogy that has gained immense popularity.

Following its release, “Inside Out 2” surpassed expectations and set a new benchmark with an impressive opening weekend gross of $154.2 million. The Pixar sequel continued to rake in earnings, ultimately amassing $646.3 million within the U.S. and a staggering $1.6 billion globally. Despite being accessible on digital platforms for home viewing, “Inside Out 2” remains among the top-earning films this week, 11 weeks after its premiere. Remarkably, it has now become the first animated film to surpass the $1 billion mark in international box office earnings.

This summer, several other film studios have enjoyed box office success with hits like Sony Pictures’ “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” and “It Ends With Us”, as well as Universal Pictures’ “Twisters” and “Despicable Me 4”. However, Disney’s achievements across numerous films spanning different genres are truly something to be applauded, demonstrating that the traditional cinema experience remains thriving.
