As a fan eagerly anticipating shows that celebrate diversity, I was dismayed to see the pre-release barrage of negative reviews aimed at Ironheart. Per GameRant’s report, the Rotten Tomatoes audience score for this show plummeted in the days before its premiere due to an avalanche of unfavorable comments sparked by rumors, character identity concerns, and political disagreements.

In simpler terms, MovieWeb found that some early reviews contained blatant racism towards Riri Williams’ character and those involved in creating the show, particularly Chinaka Hodge, the series creator and head writer. As per Coogler, Disney had a backup plan ready if such negative reviews flooded in, which is known as a “review bombing” campaign.

Growing up, I didn’t feel secure in comic book stores. However, my older cousin, a Black Gen X comic book fan from Oakland, bravely took me with him. He didn’t let the disapproving glances or comments bother him. Now, I create this show for people like his auntie and for those who might doubt if they belong in the Marvel Cinematic Universe fandom.

Essentially, Coogler is less concerned with convincing people who are resistant to the concept of a young Black woman heading a Marvel series, as they have already made up their minds.

As a film enthusiast, I wholeheartedly believe that this movie offers a wealth of experiences for those who approach it with an open heart. However, for those who arrive predisposed and close-minded, I’m afraid the film may not resonate as intended.

Coogler shifts the blame from creators to viewers by challenging fans to be more open-minded when it comes to TV shows and movies that portray diverse groups of people and their cultures, instead of blaming the creatives for any negative backlash these projects may face.

Ironheart Finds an Audience Despite Backlash

Despite a negative campaign aimed at it, Coogler’s new series, “Ironheart,” has successfully garnered an audience. Since its debut on June 25th, it quickly became the most-watched show on Disney+, securing the top spot. As of now, “Ironheart” has held onto that position for close to two weeks.

The show gained even more fame due to the mysterious figure who had long been whispered to make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with speculation starting after the release of WandaVision in 2021. This enigmatic character added to its authentic portrayal and strong narrative.
