As a child of the ’90s and early ’00s, I’ve grown up with these iconic animated movies, and each one holds a special place in my heart. Among them all, “Inside Out 2” truly resonates with me as it tackles the complexities of teenage life so beautifully. The sequel not only surpasses its original but also sets new records for Pixar films – quite an achievement!
From the moment Snow White was animated by Walt Disney in 1937, the world has been spellbound by Disney’s enchantment. For decades, Disney films have captivated us and made us fall in love with their tunes, characters, and timeless tales. Despite having a wealth of knowledge, recreating lightning in a bottle more than once has proven to be quite challenging for Disney.
Each time Disney produces a sequel, there’s usually a lot of anticipation. However, it’s frequently the case that these sequels struggle to rekindle the enchantment of the original film. The conclusive narratives of the initial movies often limit further development, and additional storylines can feel contrived instead of captivating. Nevertheless, there are instances where Disney has managed to create sequels that not only advance the narrative but are equally exceptional as the originals. These sequels hold their ground as classics, respect their ancestors, and contribute rich layers to the adventure.
10 The Lion King 1 1⁄2 (2004)
As a movie critic, I found myself captivated by the enchanting tale spun in “The Lion King 1½”. This film takes us on a journey back to the humble beginnings of our beloved characters, Timon and Pumbaa. It’s a unique blend of prequel and sidequel that offers a fresh perspective on their friendship.
A Worthy Companion to the 1994 Classic
The direct-to-video Disney sequel presents a fresh take on a popular tale, viewed from an unusual angle – that of Timon and Pumbaa’s mischievous antics. It humorously and emotionally reinterprets a story often left untold, offering a new perspective on the original narrative. The original voice actors like Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella from The Lion King return to their roles, filling in gaps about Timon and Pumbaa’s lives before meeting Simba, providing insights into how they managed to survive independently. Ultimately, The Lion King 1 1⁄2 adds a delightful twist to the enchantment of the Pride Lands.
9 The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning (2008)
In this Disney direct-to-video comedy fantasy, titled “The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning,” we delve into an early chapter of Ariel’s life, preceding the events of the initial movie. At a time before her rendezvous with Prince Eric, Ariel is a young mermaid eagerly discovering her surroundings. Following the loss of his wife, King Triton imposes a ban on music in their underwater realm. However, when Ariel befriends Flounder and joins a clandestine music group, she becomes determined to challenge this law.
Brings the Sea Realm to Life
Exploring the events that eventually lead to Ariel’s rebellion, The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning is a prequel that beautifully expands on the relationship between Ariel and her father, as well as her upbringing under her mother, Queen Athena. This tale features delightful music and poignant scenes about family bonds and friendship, while maintaining the enchanting essence of the 1989 film without compromising its timeless allure.
8 Beauty and The Beast: The Enchanted Christmas (1997)
As the festive spirit of Christmas sweeps near our magical castle, I, being a movie buff who’s deeply immersed in the world of Beauty and the Beast, find myself eager to instill some yuletide joy into the life of this enchanted duo – especially since I learned about the Beast’s aversion towards holidays. So, with a heart full of cheer, I deck the halls with holly, introduce him to the delightful art of ice skating, and even leave my own snowy footprints as angels in the courtyard. However, despite my best efforts, the Beast’s temper remains as unpredictable as ever. It seems that his staff is equally unwilling for the spell to be broken, as they continually thwart my attempts to bring happiness into their lives.
A Holiday Treat For All Ages
The first of two sequels to Beauty and the Beast movies released back to back, Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas will not go down in history as the best holiday special, but it is a true gift filled with nostalgia and warmth. The sparkling animation, reprisal of classic roles, and infusion of classic carols like “Don’t Fall In Love,” and “As Long As There’s Christmas,” taps into the spirit of the season and appeals to audiences of all ages.
7 Incredibles 2 (2018)
Fourteen years after the initial film, Incredibles 2 finds Bob grappling with his responsibilities as a home-bound parent while Helen embarks on a covert assignment to thwart the nefarious tech tycoon Evelyn Deavor, who is also known as her villainous alter ego Screenslaver. This villain aims to tarnish the reputation of superheroes, and it falls upon Eastgirl to avert disaster.
A Perfectly Stretched Sequel
Featuring the return of Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Sarah Vowell, and Samuel L. Jackson in their respective roles, “Incredibles 2” effortlessly continues the story from where it previously ended. Under the guidance of director Brad Bird, the film delves deeper into the Parr family’s journey, offering fresh action, humor, and the relatable struggle of balancing domestic life with heroic duties. Beyond being a visually stunning adventure, this sequel also delves deeply into themes of family, parenthood, and equality.
6 The Rescuers Down Under (1990)
In the heart of Australia’s untamed wilderness, a young lad named Cody experiences a terrifying twist of fate as his fervent fantasies transform into a horrific reality, with a ruthless poacher snatching him away from his parents. Simultaneously, at the Rescue Aid Society headquarters in bustling New York City, agents Bianca and Bernard become aware of Cody’s abduction. They swiftly embark on a journey to Australia, confront the treacherous outback, thwart the poacher’s plan to capture a golden eagle, and ultimately reconnect Cody with his beloved family.
An Edge-Of-Your-Seat Adventure
In the 1980s, one of Disney’s biggest hits in animated films, The Rescuers, had a follow-up titled The Rescuers Down Under. This sequel broadens the settings and intensifies the storyline. It stands out among other movies due to its breathtaking landscapes, thrilling action scenes, and deep emotional content. The return of Bob Newhart and Eva Gabor as the brave voices of Bernard and Bianca is a joy for fans who loved the original. Although the movie didn’t do well at the box office, its stunning backdrop makes it a timeless classic.
5 Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018)
Delighted by the triumphant box-office run of “Wreck-It Ralph,” earning a staggering $496 million worldwide, I eagerly anticipate the sequel, “Ralph Breaks the Internet.” This captivating tale unfolds six years after the original storyline. In this time, my beloved characters Ralph and Vanellope von Schweetz have forged an unbreakable bond of friendship. While Ralph is content with his current life, sweet Vanellope continues her quest to find her true purpose. A malfunction in Sugar Rush’s steering wheel propels our duo on a daring adventure into the unexplored realms of the vast internet, in search of its replacement part.
Utilizes a Web of Possibilities
In the animated film Ralph Breaks the Internet, a seemingly straightforward journey initially unfolds, which later escalates into an exhilarating internet-wide treasure hunt for our cherished characters. This adventure takes them through a variety of expansive landscapes and grim internet realms. Along their way, they encounter numerous pop culture sensations like Star Wars and Marvel. The film, masterfully directed by Rich Moore and Phil Johnston, was successful due to its skillful expansion on the original storyline, including appearances from all the original Disney Princesses. It also told a multilayered yet touching tale.
4 Fantasia 2000 (1999)
In 1940, Fantasia paved the way as the first film that combined eight animated sections with selections of classical music, creating an innovative animated anthology movie. Fifty-nine years later, Fantasia 2000 continued this tradition by bringing to life contemporary classical pieces. Notable figures like Steve Martin and Bette Midler introduced these segments, which were influenced by composers such as Beethoven, Stravinsky, and others.
An Audacious Sequel
The uniqueness of Fantasia 2000 lies in its frequent references back to the original version. It consistently surpasses anticipation by uniting classical masterpieces with awe-inspiring animation again. With advancements in technology, filmmakers like Éric Goldberg and Pixote Hunt utilized fluid physics, realistic environments, and creative universes to give their narratives depth and daringness. In all its beauty and longevity, the sequel serves as a reminder of why the 1940 musical remains so legendary.
3 Toy Story 3 (2010)
In the movie Toy Story 3, we join Woody, Buzz, and their fellow toys as they navigate life at a daycare center after being left there by Andy who’s going off to college. The toys feel a deep sense of distress when they are separated from their beloved owner. However, resourceful Woody convinces them that they haven’t been abandoned, and together they devise an escape plan to get back to Andy. Yet, their poignant journey nears a bittersweet end as Andy gives them to a young girl named Bonnie instead.
Delivers a Heart-Wrenching Conclusion
The initial installment of the Toy Story series stands out as exceptional, and although Toy Story 3 doesn’t quite surpass it, its poignant and melancholic ending can still bring tears to many viewers’ eyes. Skillfully directed by Lee Unkrich, it provides a fitting conclusion to the storyline. The film delves into themes such as growing up, letting go, and discovering one’s purpose, striking a chord with both longtime fans and newcomers. Additionally, Pixar’s enchantment is amplified by exceptional voice acting, meticulous attention to detail, and humorous appearances that emphasize the importance of friendship.
2 Frozen II (2019)
Given that the animated movie “Frozen” is one of Disney’s biggest hits, it was only natural for a sequel to be eagerly awaited and well-received. Three years on from Elsa’s conquest over her icy abilities, Arendelle flourishes under the rule of the sisterly duo. However, when Elsa begins to hear a sinister and ominous voice emanating from beyond its borders, she decides to embark on an adventure with Anna, enlisting the help of friends Kristoff, Sven, and Olaf, as they delve into the enigmatic forest in search of the source.
All About Sisterly Love and Self-Discovery
In my perspective as a movie reviewer, Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee skillfully delve deeper into unanswered mysteries from the initial film, such as Elsa’s magical abilities’ origins, while still maintaining a sense of freshness and originality. The captivating visuals, clever integration of magic, and heartfelt emotions make Frozen II a profound viewing experience. This sequel also boasts an impressive array of musical numbers, once again orchestrated by the Lopez duo (Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez).
1 Inside Out 2 (2024)
After spending two years adjusting to life in San Francisco as a teenager, Riley’s feelings have developed significantly. The fundamental aspects of her mind are governed by Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear. Just before summer camp, Riley experiences puberty, causing new emotions such as Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Apathy to arise, creating chaos within the control center of her mind. The question remains: Can Riley’s feelings cooperate to promote her happiness?
Highlights the Growing Pains of Teenagehood
Revisiting the lively and intelligent universe nestled within Riley’s mind, this highly anticipated sequel not only matches its predecessor’s excellence but surpasses it by earning approximately $1.6 billion globally and becoming the highest-grossing Pixar film ever made. Making its debut as Kelsey Mann’s first directorial project, Inside Out 2 further explores enduring themes of acceptance, change, and kindness while skillfully addressing teenage concerns in a way that is engaging, amusing, enchanting, and visually stunning.
