Disney+ Sets July Premiere for Korean Treasure-Hunt Drama ‘Low Life’

Actor Ryu Seung-ryong, who played the lead role in Disney+’s record-breaking Asian original “Moving”, is back on the streaming service next month with “Low Life”. This vibrant period crime drama unfolds against the seedy underbelly of 1970s South Korea. The 11-episode series starts airing on July 16, with a triple episode premiere followed by weekly episodes leading to a two-part finale on August 13.

In the hands of director Kang Yun-seong, who has written for Disney+’s “Big Bet” and directed the Korean blockbuster “The Outlaws,” the movie “Low Life” unfolds. This film centers around a duo, an uncle and nephew, who are not much more than small-time con artists. They come across an intriguing tale: a ship believed to be carrying a fortune in treasures has been discovered off the coast of Korea. With visions of finally becoming wealthy beyond their wildest dreams, they jump into a dangerous competition against other treasure hunters, opportunists, and unsavory characters from the underworld.

Ryu takes on the role of experienced swindler Oh Gwanseok, who’s after a major payday one last time. In contrast, the up-and-coming Yang Se-jong (known for shows like “Doona!” and “Temperature of Love”) portrays his naive nephew, Oh Heedong. The ensemble also features Im Soo-jung, who’s starred in productions like “Melancholia” and “Single in Seoul”, as Yang Jungsook, the powerful matriarch of Hongbaek Industries. Her personal aspirations add a layer of complexity to the treasure hunt.

The newest offering, “Low Life,” joins Disney+’s growing library of premium Korean productions, following successful titles like “Hyper Knife” and “Nine Puzzles,” the latter being Disney+’s most-watched Korean drama from 2025. Later in the year, Disney+ will premiere additional high-profile Korean projects such as “Tempest,” starring Gianna Jun, Gang Dongwon, and John Cho, and “Made in Korea” led by Hyun Bin and Jung Woosung.

Disney+’s latest addition is the gritty drama, “Low Life.” This follows popular Korean titles like “Hyper Knife” and “Nine Puzzles,” with the latter being Disney+’s most-watched Korean series from 2025. In the coming months, Disney+ will introduce more star-studded Korean projects including “Tempest” featuring Gianna Jun, Gang Dongwon, and John Cho, as well as “Made in Korea,” headlined by Hyun Bin and Jung Woosung.

The show follows Disney’s plan to expand its collection of high-quality Asian productions, specifically Korean dramas that combine popular genres with authentic local settings and star talent. In the case of “Low Life“, it seems they are adopting a vintage film noir aesthetic and anti-hero narrative, hoping to emulate the global success of shows like “Big Bet ” and “Narco-Saints“.
