As a long-time Disneyland visitor and avid gamer, I have witnessed firsthand the magic and enchantment that the Happiest Place on Earth brings to millions of people every year. However, behind the scenes, there’s a different story unfolding for the unsung heroes who keep this magical kingdom running smoothly – the hardworking cast members.
Disneyland employees and their employers came to a preliminary deal on a contract on Tuesday. This means that a threatened strike by around 14,000 workers was prevented for now.
At Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, Downtown Disney, and the Disney hotels in Anaheim, the employees represented by the Master Services Council – which consists of custodians, ride operators, candy makers, merchandise clerks, and other workers – had previously given their union, Disney Workers Rising, permission to call for a strike if no contract deal was forthcoming. However, following two more rounds of negotiations on Monday and Tuesday, the parties reached a preliminary agreement.
The Disney Workers Rising Bargaining Committee is thrilled to share that we’ve made significant progress in our negotiations. We’ve reached a preliminary deal with Disney and plan to present it to our colleagues for consideration. Over the past four months, cast members have displayed incredible determination and resilience. This agreement wouldn’t exist without their collective efforts, as well as the encouragement from our guests and the wider community.
“The committee expressed that they have demonstrated their magical abilities at Disney’s theme park, and today’s events are proof that when employees unite for fair treatment, they emerge victorious. They are eager to make their opinions count during the contract approval vote.”
As a gamer, I’ll be among those who get to cast their votes on the new gaming contract coming up on July 29. The specifics of this new deal will only be revealed to the public once the voting process is complete.
On April 24, 2024, I joined my fellow union members in starting negotiations with Disney. Our main objectives were to secure better wages for ourselves, establish a reasonable attendance policy, promote seniority advancements, and ensure the safety of both our team members and park guests.
As an avid Disneyland fan, I can share that my favorite cast members’ contracts at the main park ended on June 16, 2024. Meanwhile, for Disney California Adventure and Downtown Disney enthusiasts like myself, their beloved cast members’ contracts will conclude on September 30, 2024.
