The upcoming Cinderella remake, initially released in 2015, is set for another spin, but this time, it might deviate significantly from the original tale more than any other adaptation so far, to the point where Cinderella herself won’t be a part of the storyline. Instead, the new live-action Prince Charming movie, which was first announced in October 2020, is under development by Paddington director Paul King. Chris Hemsworth had initially been considered for the lead role, but recent reports suggest that he’s no longer attached to the project. More recently, it’s been reported that Twisters actress Daisy Edgar-Jones has joined the cast, and details about her character have surfaced.

A live-action version of Disney’s character, Prince Charming, seems to be progressing, as per reports from Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman. The storyline is said to revolve around an unnamed animator (played by Edgar-Jones), who draws sketches of Prince Charming from Cinderella. One day her drawing comes alive. As of now, no additional plot details for the movie have been revealed, and Richtman’s report remains unconfirmed by Disney representatives.

In terms of atmosphere, the storyline of Prince Charming seems reminiscent of Kevin Lima’s Enchanted, with Amy Adams portraying a princess who finds herself in our world due to her wicked stepmother. It remains unclear how heavily Prince Charming will draw from the classic Cinderella film or Charles Perrault’s more somber tale. According to Richtman’s report, the Prince Charming character in this adaptation is expected to be consistent with the canon of Cinderella, but may undergo changes to suit a modern live-action style and to update the traditional “white knight” trope, where the hero rescues the damsel in distress.

Furthermore, an official release date for “Prince Charming” hasn’t been announced yet.

The upcoming movie marks Disney’s second endeavor to create a solo film based on the beloved Cinderella character. Initially, in 2017, Stephen Chbosky was commissioned for both writing and potentially directing a live-action Prince Charming story. This project came after the satisfactory performance of his Beauty and the Beast adaptation. Nevertheless, Disney decided not to proceed with this film.

Disney’s live-action remakes have had a varied reception, with some receiving high praise and strong box office earnings, while others have fallen flat. For instance, the 2016 version of The Jungle Book has been the most successful adaptation to date, boasting a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but the upcoming Pinocchio, due for release in 2022, is currently predicted to be the least popular with a score of just 27%.
