As a fan who has been following The Bachelorette for years, I was absolutely devastated by how Jenn Tran’s finale unfolded. Watching her relive the pain of her broken engagement with Devin Strader, while he sat right next to her, was heart-wrenching and unnecessary.
There’s been considerable backlash from Bachelor Nation following the airing of Season 21 finale on the 2024 TV schedule. Many fans found it heartless when Jenn Tran was forced to rewatch her proposal, crying throughout, with her former fiancé Devin Strader seated beside her. Jenn later shared her thoughts about that controversial finale, confessing she contemplated leaving the stage, but she justified why the proposal had to be shown.
The unprecedented event on an unprecedented season unfortunately left a lasting negative impact during its September 3 finale. Jenn Tran, who became the first Asian American lead in the ‘Bachelor’ franchise, also made history as the first ‘Bachelorette’ to propose to her final suitor. However, ABC’s decision to broadcast that proposal in a specific manner was arguably one of its most heart-wrenching moves since the controversial finale of ‘The Bachelor’ Season 22, when Arie Luyendyk Jr. unexpectedly broke up with Becca Kufrin on camera during a “romantic getaway.” Jenn expressed to Glamour that she felt an overwhelming desire to escape the scene on Tuesday, stating:
In my thoughts, I pondered over it. It struck me that I wasn’t entirely at ease showing such strong emotions in front of a large audience. I wrestled with the question, Should I flee the stage or would that cause more chaos? But when tears began to flow, I realized that leaving would only add to the drama. So, I hesitated, trying to decide what to do in that moment, ultimately struggling with myself and my actions.
As I sat on my couch, wide-eyed, during the finale, a question crossed my mind: Why doesn’t she choose to depart when she has the freedom to do so? It seems they lack the power to keep her, could she be hesitant about exacerbating the situation?
Apparently, the producers of “The Bachelorette” informed Jenn Tran about the outcome of the finale, and despite its difficulty, she felt it was essential for her proposal to be aired. Jenn expressed this herself.
Indeed, I was aware of the upcoming event as they had outlined the strategy for me. However, I underestimated the emotional weight I would feel upon seeing [Devin] once more and revisiting our previous conversation. That evening, my anxiety spiked significantly, causing my emotions to fluctuate wildly from the start. Watching it back with him was challenging, yet I knew it was necessary for him to view that segment, as I believed it was important for his perspective.
Jenn Tran felt it was crucial for her ex, Devin Strader, to rewatch their shared proposal moments because it seemed as if he might have forgotten some of the promises he made throughout the season, along with the things he said during that time.
Couldn’t help but wonder if you might reconsider viewing this again and reflecting on the words you used towards me? Perhaps then, you may come to understand why your actions have left me feeling deeply hurt. To be honest, I hadn’t anticipated such a strong emotional response.
It was undeniably an emotional scene, and fans of Bachelor Nation collectively felt a deep sense of sympathy for Jenn Tran’s ordeal on stage. Regardless of her desire for Devin Strader to recall their promises made that day, I believe broadcasting the proposal in such a manner – with them both on stage together, after it had become public knowledge that they had parted ways – was an ill-advised decision.
It would be great if participating in ‘Dancing with the Stars’ turns out to be less distressing for Jenn Tran, as she has been added to the Season 33 lineup. However, after learning about Charity Lawson’s experiences of being bullied by ‘DWTS’ fans, which included death threats, I must admit that I have some reservations.
Don’t miss the debut of her dance performances (alongside Joey Graziadei) as “Dancing with the Stars” kicks off at 8 p.m. ET on Tuesday, September 17, only on ABC, and if you have a Disney+ subscription, don’t forget to stream it there too!
