Doctor Who and Star Trek Showrunners Campaign for Crossover Episode

Summary

  • Fans continue to push for a Star Trek/Doctor Who crossover, excited by the possibility of a shared episode between the two iconic franchises.
  • While previous crossovers in comic book form have been non-canon, the potential for an official crossover between the two universes remains a tantalizing prospect.
  • The values and perspectives shared by Star Trek and Doctor Who make them ideal candidates for a crossover that could be enlightening for viewers.

As a lifelong fan of both Star Trek and Doctor Who, the prospect of a crossover between these two iconic franchises is like a dream come true. Growing up with Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise on one hand, and The Doctor traversing time and space in the TARDIS on the other, I’ve always marveled at the shared values and progressive perspectives they represent.

Sci-fi classics like Star Trek and Doctor Who are deeply embedded in nerd culture. Originating back in the ’60s, they’ve consistently shown social progressiveness, and it’s possible that they might intersect in a future crossover.

At San Diego Comic-Con, Alex Kurtzman from Star Trek’s executive production team and Russell T. Davies, Doctor Who’s showrunner, both showed great enthusiasm about the possibility of a genuine crossover episode between the two shows. According to Davies, “The fans are our key to making this happen.” He continued, “Fans have been creating amazing crossover art, stories, and pushing for these universes to merge. It’s not just something we want; it’s something that needs to occur.”

Kurtzman stated, “We have similar beliefs and perceptions of the world. Our aim is to narrate enlightening stories about humanity. Every portrayal of The Doctor and every version of Star Trek has striven to do this for each generation it caters to. It’s that profound bond we strive to maintain.”

A Star Trek/Doctor Who Crossover Might Be Non-Canon

A Star Trek/Doctor Who crossover could not come at a better time. Star Trek is currently airing three different shows: Prodigy, Lower Decks, and Strange New Worlds, having just completed runs on Picard and Discovery. Meanwhile, Doctor Who recently announced a new spin-off entitled The War Between the Land and the Sea. Both franchises are thriving and full of life.

Interestingly enough, these franchises have collaborated previously, but never on a movie or TV show. For instance, a comic book featuring the Eleventh Doctor encountering the Star Trek: The Next Generation team surfaced in 2012. Although it’s not considered part of the main storyline, it’s a rare crossover option for fans seeking such an interaction. Recently, a joint mobile game venture titled Star Trek: Lower Decks — The Badgey Initiative and Doctor Who: Lost in Time was announced as well.

As a die-hard gamer, if a magical collision of two beloved universes were to occur, it wouldn’t necessarily adhere to the established rules (canon). The realms they inhabit are vastly dissimilar in numerous aspects – but who knows? Maybe there’s an intricate loophole that allows them to merge without disrupting their core narratives too much. If I had to pick a candidate for this daring crossover, it would be Star Trek: Lower Decks; after all, Lower Decks has shown it’s not afraid of taking bold risks!

However, some enthusiasts might prefer a live-action version if Star Trek and Doctor Who‘s initial crossover were to happen. Given that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which recently showcased a musical episode, seems more appealing in this scenario, it could be the go-to option. Until an official crossover is announced, though, all speculation remains purely hypothetical.
