‘Doctor Who’ Christmas Special Trailer: Ncuti Gatwa, Nicola Coughlan Take on Danger and Dinosaurs

As a lifelong Whovian, I can hardly contain my excitement as the first trailer for the Doctor Who Christmas special, “Joy to the World,” has graced our screens! Having grown up with the Time Lord’s adventures and traversing through multiple regenerations, this season holds a special place in my heart.

The initial trailer for the “Joy to the World” Christmas special of Doctor Who has been released, and in it we catch a glimpse of the Doctor, who is now without a companion following Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday’s departure at the end of season 14. In this adventure, the Doctor appears to be working tirelessly to preserve Christmas, not just on one planet, but across the entire cosmos.

In the year 2024, when Joy arrives at a London hotel, she stumbles upon a hidden entrance leading to the Time Hotel. Here, she encounters peril, dinosaurs, and the Doctor. However, an ominous scheme is brewing globally, perfectly timed for Christmas celebrations.

In this story, the characters portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa, known for his role in “Sex Education” and as the Fifteenth Doctor since 2023’s “The Giggle,” and Nicola Coughlan from “Bridgerton,” named Joy, are central. Additionally, Steph de Whalley, Jonathan Aris, Joel Fry, Peter Benedict, Julia Watson, and Niamh Marie Smith also appear in the episode.

The series “Joy to the World” boasts Steven Moffat, a veteran from “Doctor Who” and “Sherlock,” as both its executive producer and writer. Directed by Alex Sanjiv Pillai, who has previously worked on “Riverdale” and “Bridgerton,” this show also counts Russell T Davies among its showrunners and executive producers. Furthermore, Joel Collins, Phil Collinson, Julie Gardner, and Jane Tranter are listed as additional executive producers.

The Doctor Who Christmas Special debuts on Disney+ at 9:10 a.m. PST/12:10 p.m. EST on Dec. 25.
