Proceed with caution: The fourth episode of Doctor Who season 15, titled “Lucky Day,” seems to resolve a long-standing enigma initiated since the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) encountered Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu) in “The Robot Revolution.” However, I’m hesitant about how I might react if this revelation turns out to be exactly as it seems. Towards the end of “The Robot Revolution,” the Fifteenth Doctor hinted that he had been informed about Belinda by an unnamed individual, suggesting she would be significant. By the close of “Lucky Day,” it appears that Doctor Who is preparing to conclude this mystery.
If “Lucky Day” resolves this specific mystery regarding Belinda’s initial meeting with the Doctor, it might seem somewhat anticlimactic given the magnitude of the question at hand in the world of Doctor Who. Given that the Disney era has had its fair share of underwhelming disclosures, it could be a daring decision for showrunner Russell T. Davies to introduce another one concerning Belinda. Hopefully, the scene in “Lucky Day” is merely a hint pointing towards a bigger revelation about who informed the Doctor about Belinda Chandra.
It Seems Like It Was Conrad Who Told The Fifteenth Doctor About Belinda
The Doctor hadn’t yet met Belinda when he crossed paths with Conrad at the end of “Lucky Day”
At the close of “Lucky Day,” when Conrad Clark, played by Jonah Hauer-King, momentarily escapes prison, he encounters a disgruntled Thirteenth Doctor, enraged over Conrad’s actions against the new UNIT team in “Doctor Who” and especially his deceit of Millie Gibson’s character, Ruby Sunday. Upon being introduced as a friend of Ruby, Conrad retorts, “‘Have you ever come across Belinda Chandra?’” To which the Doctor replies with confusion, “Who?“, indicating that he has not yet encountered this person and it’s the first time he’s heard the name – from none other than Conrad himself.
Someone mentioned your name to me, implying that you might play a significant role. However, the circumstances surrounding this are quite intricate, so let me tread carefully with the sequence of events.
– The Doctor to Belinda in Doctor Who season 15, episode 1, “The Robot Revolution.”
The story unfolds following the conclusion of Doctor Who season 14 and prior to the start of season 15. In this interval, the Doctor (Fifteen) has had his adventures with Ruby but has not yet encountered Belinda. Conrad, who interacts with both Belinda and Fifteen at the onset of “Lucky Day,” possesses a slight edge in terms of respect from Hauer-King’s character due to his foreknowledge about what lies ahead for the Time Lord. This encounter at the end of “Lucky Day” might be the reference the Doctor makes in “The Robot Revolution.
Conrad Being The Answer Is A Bit Of An Anticlimax
There were better options for who told the Doctor about Belinda
In the context of his initial appearance, Conrad is an effective villain, but within a broader, more expansive narrative context, he seems out of place. The concept of an imprisoned conspiracy theorist initiating Doctor Who’s season 15 is plausible on paper, yet it doesn’t carry enough weight to warrant his role in Belinda’s larger story for his contribution to the mystery to be convincing. He knew very little about Belinda beyond her name and her appearance.
Conrad didn’t seem to emphasize Belinda’s name as if she held significant importance during their initial encounter in 2007, contrary to what the Doctor suggested in “The Robot Revolution.” In reality, it was more a matter of luck for Conrad that he recognized Belinda that day. There’s no underlying significance to his knowledge of her identity or reason to consider her special. While this aligns with the show’s established lore, it might not deliver the satisfying revelation I’ve been anticipating since the Fifteen’s enigmatic explanation in the season 15 premiere.
Who Else Might’ve Told The Fifteenth Doctor About Belinda, If Not Conrad
My alternate contender is a very familiar face
Currently, my top guess is that Conrad might be the individual who revealed Dr. Belinda’s name to the Doctor. While the evidence in “Lucky Day” is substantial, it isn’t completely conclusive yet. This means there’s still a chance that the Doctor began investigating Belinda following his conversation with Conrad, but only decided to seek her out after talking to someone else. If this is the case, I believe another plausible option could be Belinda’s father, as he hasn’t been introduced yet but has been mentioned by Belinda multiple times, which could hint at his future appearance in the storyline.
Another way of expressing this could be:
“Fifteen’s apprehensions about deadlines might hint at something more than just his chat with Conrad. It’s possible that Fifteen’s future self, as seen in the last season of Doctor Who, has traveled back in time to manipulate events by warning his past self to find Belinda. The Doctor is known for interfering with his own timeline, but it could be disastrous if too much information about such an encounter leaks out. However, only the final episodes of Doctor Who season 15 can confirm the truth. But until then, I can’t help but speculate.
