Doctor Who Just Introduced A Villain Bigger Than OMEGA?!

Heed this notice: The upcoming episode of Doctor Who season 15, titled “The Reality War,” marks the return of Omega, a character significant in the series history. However, a more formidable menace looms on the horizon for our beloved Time Lord. Last seen in 1983’s “Arc of Infinity”, Omega, a complex and intriguing figure who played a crucial role in the creation of the Time Lords, reemerged from the Underverse at the end of season 15, only to be swiftly sent back by the Fifteenth Doctor during Ncuti Gatwa’s final adventure. The defeat of Omega was relatively effortless, but I suspect he will return in the future.

The 16th season of Doctor Who hasn’t been confirmed yet, but the transformation of Ncuti Gatwa into Billie Piper suggests that showrunner Russell T. Davies has grand ideas for additional episodes. Even though characters like the Rani (Anita Dobson), Conrad Clark (Jonah Hauer-King), and Omega (Nicholas Briggs) survived “The Reality War,” it appears that Davies is eager to continue the storyline with an unsolved mystery that will likely bring a new danger for the main character. It’s possible this new menace could be someone we already know, but under a different alias. In any case, a significant revelation seems imminent.

Doctor Who Season 15’s Finale Brings Back The “Boss” Mystery

Fifteen still seems understandably confused about who the Boss is

In the 2023 release of “The Star Beast,” a mysterious figure known as “The Boss” was introduced when David Tennant returned as the Fourteenth Doctor. When the Fourteenth Doctor defeated the Meep (played by Miriam Margolyes) and secured a 10,000-year prison term in “The Star Beast,” the fluffy yet menacing alien cryptically warned Tennant’s Doctor, hinting that the Meep’s supervisor would soon be paying a visit to the Time Lord because of his two hearts.

I’ll slip away for now, but don’t think this ends here, Doctor. There’s something else you should know.

FOURTEEN: “Which is?”

THE MEEP: “A creature with two hearts is such a rare thing. Just wait till I tell the Boss.”

Doctor Who‘s first 60th-anniversary special, “The Star Beast.”

In the time since “The Star Beast,” the Boss has only infrequently been brought up, with exceptions such as when the main character in “Doctor Who” season 14, episode 6, “Rogue,” played by Jonathan Groff, refers to a new superior. Few details about this enigmatic figure have emerged, but they resurface again in “The Reality War,” albeit with minimal information on their identity or intentions.

In the latest installment, Anita Benn, last seen in the 2024 Christmas special “Joy to the World,” makes her comeback. After parting ways with the Doctor in “The Reality War,” Anita greets Fifteen by saying that “The Boss” sends his regards, implying a familiarity between Gatwa’s character and this enigmatic figure. It seems that the Boss holds some level of power over Anita, and perhaps, indirectly, over the Time Hotel as well.

Who “The Boss” Could Be In Doctor Who

The Master could be the Boss, but there are other options

It appears that the true identity of The Boss might be exposed soon, given that the latest antagonists have either been defeated or are now in hiding. If this turns out to be true, it could mean that character’s real name will be disclosed during Doctor Who season 16. Although we don’t have enough details at present to make a definitive guess about The Boss’ identity, there’s no harm in entertaining some speculation.

It seems more likely that the Boss character will be based on a previously established Doctor Who character rather than a completely new one. If it turns out to be someone we’ve seen before, it might not create as much excitement. Given this possibility, I believe the Master or Sacha Dhawan’s portrayal of him could be the character in question, given his recent appearance in the show. As another possibility, the Valeyard, an evil future Doctor yet to make a comeback since 1986’s “The Trial of a Time Lord” serial, might also fit the bill.

Anita Knowing The Boss Means They May Not Be A Villain

The Time Hotel’s new manager is too nice to knowingly associate with bad guys

It’s generally thought that the Boss is a villain based on how they’ve been portrayed so far. However, it’s also possible that they might not be a bad guy at all. If their connection to the Time Hotel, as hinted by Anita’s mention in “The Reality War,” is true, it could be troubling that such a mysterious character has control over time travel. Yet, there’s a chance that they could be working alongside the Doctor.

In a different phrasing, Anita appears to be the only character currently linked with the Boss who gives an impression of a cordial offscreen figure. It’s worth considering that the Boss might be working alongside someone who has not yet shown their true colors as a potential antagonist similar to the Doctor Who villains.
