As a long-time Whovian with a heart full of Gallifreyan memories, I must say that the news about the upcoming “Joy To The World” Doctor Who Christmas special has me both excited and apprehensive. Having witnessed Steven Moffat’s knack for crafting heart-wrenching stories, his description of Nicola Coughlan’s performance as “heartbreaking” sends a chill down my Time Lord spine.
It turns out that the highly-anticipated Christmas special of “Doctor Who,” available exclusively on Disney+, is promising some intriguing details. The excitement grew when it was announced at San Diego Comic-Con that Nicola Coughlan from “Bridgerton” would be a major guest star for “Joy To The World.” Now, we’ve received additional information about her character, and Steven Moffat used a particular term to describe her role which has left me feeling apprehensive.
Moffat is coming back to Doctor Who following strong pleas from the present showrunner Russell T. Davies. I’m optimistic about the episode scheduled for broadcast at the tail end of 2024, given Moffat’s past collaboration with Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor. However, the recent news concerning Nicola Coughlan’s character Joy has raised some concerns in me.
How Steven Moffat Described Nicola Coughlan’s Performance In The Christmas Special
In a recent interview with Radio Times, Steven Moffat described Nicola Coughlan’s performance as Joy as “heartbreaking.” While this might not be the first term that comes to mind when discussing some of the most cheerful Christmas movies, it seems fitting for the complexities often found in Doctor Who.
There seems to be an equal chance of the holiday special having either a joyful or melancholic conclusion, and given that single word, I’m leaning more towards the possibility of a sad finale this Christmas. In essence, viewers should keep some tissues handy when tuning in for the upcoming holiday screening.
Is Steven Moffat Preparing To Kill Another Doctor Who Companion?
As a dedicated viewer, I can’t help but feel thrilled about Nicola Coughlan’s character, Joy, potentially joining The Doctor for this year’s Christmas special! However, it’s worth mentioning that Steven Moffat has a certain reputation regarding his companions’ arcs.
He has contributed significantly to the departures of characters like Amy Pond and Rory Williams, who were taken back in time by the Weeping Angels and eventually succumbed to old age. He was also the head writer during Clara Oswald’s sacrificial act, and Bill Potts was tragically trapped in an oil spill. Moreover, he penned the demise of The Doctor’s wife, River Song, who was once speculated as a potential mother for Ruby Sunday, but we later found out otherwise.
Combine that with the understanding that The Doctor is about to confront an age-old enemy from the past, and it seems like a fitting recipe for Doctor Who to provide an emotionally charged farewell to a character we’ve just recently encountered.
It’s unfortunate if that turns out to be true, because I’m a fan of the actress from Derry Girls, and I hope she continues in more stories. However, it’s not uncommon for actors who’ve been on Doctor Who to reappear as different characters later, so it wouldn’t surprise me if Joy is killed off and Coughlan shows up again as another persona. Yet, I’d prefer if her character makes it through the Christmas special, but we’ll have to keep our fingers crossed about how things unfold.
Don’t miss out on the Doctor Who Christmas special streaming on Disney+ this Christmas Day! Whether it brings tears to your eyes or not, I highly recommend tuning in once you’ve wrapped up your holiday celebrations. Enjoy the show!
