Doctor Who’s Timey-Wimey Confusion: Stars Admit They Struggled Too!

Caution: The subsequent content may reveal plot points from the “The Robot Revolution” episode of “Doctor Who”. You can watch it on Disney+, but beware of potential spoilers if you proceed!

The popular series “Doctor Who” has returned on Disney+, and while we anticipate further adventures with the Pantheon in the forthcoming season, the time-bending complexities of the recent season premiere left me puzzled about the sequence of events. Indeed, actors Varada Sethu and Ncuti Gatwa have hinted that the upcoming episodes involve a lot of intricate timeline maneuvers, to such an extent that even they found it challenging to keep track of everything.

The actors were kind enough to spare some time with TopMob before the premiere of Doctor Who, and they opened up honestly about the challenges they faced in synchronizing their understanding of the storyline at times. When I inquired about this, Sethu mentioned a strategy she often employs during her work that proved much harder to implement on the show:

As a cinephile immersed in the creative process, when I’m crafting characters for a project, especially when given a season-long story arc, I sketch out a timeline to keep track of each character’s progression. However, during filming, adhering strictly to that timeline proved challenging due to the dynamic nature of our narrative. We were constantly zooming in and out, revealing past events that would influence future occurrences. Goodness gracious! The intricacies often left us bewildered, with one of us leading the other through the labyrinth. We’d have meetings to untangle the knots, and there were days when we’d both find ourselves lost, with one guiding the other.

Viewers puzzled by instances when The Doctor seemed out of chronological order during episodes, take comfort in knowing that the actors themselves shared the same confusion. It seems this season may involve time leaps and unexpected moments much like “Doctor Who: Flux“, and the full picture might not become clear until we’ve witnessed the entire story arc unfold.

It seems there’s quite a mystery unfolding this season. Some speculate whether The Doctor has found himself in a fairy tale world, or perhaps we’re witnessing an alternate reality. Others wonder if this could be just a dream. Intriguingly, Ncuti Gatwa, who is said to be leaving the series soon, playfully accused showrunner Russell T. Davies of not providing many answers yet.

We found it challenging to comprehend since at times, when asked about a topic, Russell would respond, “I’m not sure. I merely composed it.

If readers who are fans of “Doctor Who” are finding themselves anxious due to certain statements, there’s no need for worry. The assumption here is that Gatwa might have been joking when he suggested RTD was unsure about the storyline, given his confirmation that this season will delve into significant mysteries like the fate of Mrs. Flood. However, if RTD did struggle a bit with managing multiple scripts and integrating them, I can’t help but sympathize, as such complexity could easily lead to confusion.

Varada Sethu further explained that when you’re an actor, it can often be challenging to keep track of the storyline during filming because the scenes aren’t filmed in sequence. Instead, actors may move from shooting a final scene to working on something for the opening episode right away. However, she admitted that even if they had followed this approach, it might not have made much difference: they would still face similar difficulties.

Filming can often be puzzling since scenes aren’t typically shot in sequence. In this project, there was an opportunity for chronological filming, but even then, it remained complex due to time-travel elements. As an actor, I not only had to perform my role, Belinda, but also grapple with the question of how we could effectively portray the narrative. For instance, ‘Does she know this event has transpired yet?’ Though she’s unaware, it could make for a compelling plot twist. This added layer of complexity made the job all the more enjoyable.

This fun, intriguing journey served as an exciting test for the actors portraying The Doctor and Companion, immersing themselves in a time-travel escapade that twists through the fabric of time. Although it’s uncertain if they were aware while filming, there appears to be substantial weight on this season’s success, as whispers continue about the potential termination of the series.

As a devoted fan, I must clarify that the BBC has dismissed any talk of immediate cancellation. However, with both the network and Disney+ monitoring viewership to determine the future of the next season, it feels uncertain whether we’ll be seeing a new season right away. It seems plausible that the series might take a break for a year at least, giving us fans a temporary hiatus.
