In a fresh chapter, “Sex Education” once again graced our screens today, featuring Ncuti Gatwa’s lively portrayal of the Doctor for another round of thrilling time-travel escapades. Joining him this season is Belinda Chandra, brilliantly portrayed by actress Varada Sethu. In an interview with Radio Times prior to the series’ comeback, Sethu addressed the show’s criticism as being “woke,” and she sees it as a positive sign that they are on the right track.
In the second season of the show, or season 15 to many viewers, is being particularly memorable due to the first instance where two characters of color shared control of the TARDIS. Sethu discussed this point by saying:
Ncuti expressed, “Check us out! We’re inside the Tardis now. We’re going to ruffle quite a few feathers, it seems.” Although there have been a few instances of ‘Doctor Woke’ [references], I believe we are on the right path if we receive comments like that. The term ‘Woke’ symbolizes inclusivity, progressiveness, and compassion – qualities that I think align well with the essence of Doctor Who, which is fundamentally about kindness, love, and doing what’s right.
In the role of an enthusiastic viewer, I must admit that the premiere of the latest season of Doctor Who has sparked quite a conversation. Although the critics have showered it with a perfect score of 100%, the audience’s response has been more diverse, with a rating of 52%.
Doctor Who’s Reviews Show How Divided the World Is
As a fan, I’m thrilled by the outstanding reception that Doctor Who is receiving upon its comeback. The flawless Tomatometer score suggests that the critics are appreciating what the show is offering, and I couldn’t agree more.
Ben Dowell from The Times described the season opener as a “fun, swiftly-paced hour of television, filled with the signature wit of Russell Davies and the delightful surprises you’d expect from someone who still yearns for that blue box to whisk him off on incredible adventures.”
Hoai-Tran Bui from Inverse pointed out that where the show seemed unsure about its audience and tone in the previous season, Season 2 boldly presses forward with self-assurance. It’s experimenting fearlessly with form and social commentary, offering fresh and exciting perspectives.
On the other hand, viewers seem quite critical towards the series. Some were willing to overlook minor flaws, but others were merciless in their criticism of the program. An anonymous viewer even went as far as to harshly criticize it.
Reimagining The Doctor’s character drastically and introducing an unpopular new cast, seemingly disregarding fan feedback and showing a clear political slant. Instead of creating an engaging story for all, the narrative appears to be manipulated as a political device rather than providing entertainment. Critics either seem biased or naive, given the poor quality of special effects, even when compared to those in the 2000s.
User William H expressed his disapproval towards Gatwa, stating, “If viewers felt for Ncuti Gatwa just a fraction of what he seems to feel about himself, the ratings for the current series would be soaring, but they aren’t and they won’t.” He also added comments like “the writing is foolish” and mentioned that, despite being dedicated fans, they won’t watch the show.
Simply put, while feedback from online reviews might be valuable for discussion, it doesn’t directly contribute to earning income. For instance, if Doctor Who achieves its desired viewership on BBC and Disney, they won’t necessarily care about comments posted on a review aggregator site.
