‘Doctors warned me to come out of character’: Nawazuddin Siddiqui opens up about intense role prep that landed him in hospital

Throughout an illustrious acting career, Nawazuddin Siddiqui has portrayed many unforgettable characters that resonate with viewers. While his on-screen performances seem effortless, they are underpinned by great commitment off-screen. In a recent interview, the actor disclosed some insights into his preparation techniques and shared an instance where he immersed himself so fully in one character that a doctor advised him to detach due to concerns it might escalate into a significant issue.

In an interview with Just Too Filmy, Nawazuddin Siddiqui discussed his intense involvement in portraying a serial killer for Anurag Kashyap’s movie Psycho Raman. He disclosed that while filming, he became so engrossed that he actually fell sick and needed to be admitted to the hospital after collapsing on set.

Based on what he shared, he got so deeply involved in the character that he ended up speaking lines from the movie without realizing it while lying in the hospital bed. People around him later told him about his actions, and doctors reportedly suggested he take a break from the role for the good of both his mental and physical health.

During a recent chat, Nawazuddin Siddiqui disclosed that in order to depict the character of Tehmur Langda in Aamir Khan’s movie Talaash, he needed to undergo substantial transformations to his overall appearance.

Nawaz noted that he needed to embody a quick-moving, slightly lame character, and make his eyes pop whenever speaking, to truly portray this role. Interestingly, in real life, he’s quite tranquil, but for this part, he had to take on these dynamic characteristics.

Apart from that memorable role as Faizal in Gangs of Wasseypur, Nawazuddin Siddiqui also reminisced about the extensive efforts he made to make his portrayal genuine.

As a committed performer, I’d opt for using glycerin instead of shedding genuine tears. The goal isn’t to induce discomfort, but rather to convincingly portray red, agonized eyes, thereby enhancing the authenticity of my act. In simpler terms, I’d say, “I’d use glycerin in my eyes, not to cry, but to make them look red and express some pain.

In terms of his career, Nawazuddin Siddiqui recently appeared in Zee5’s Costao, a production that drew varied opinions from critics but was highly praised for his individual performance. Moving forward, he is slated to star in the Netflix film titled Raat Akeli Hai 2.
