As a seasoned gamer and music enthusiast who’s had the pleasure of witnessing some truly remarkable performances, I must say that Doechii’s Tiny Desk concert was nothing short of extraordinary. With her unique blend of jazz, rap, and storytelling, she effortlessly transported us into her world, a swampy realm filled with raw emotion and unparalleled talent.
Following Wednesday evening’s captivating performance by Stephen Colbert, which cleverly combined “DENIAL IS A RIVER” and “BOILED PEANUTS”, Doechii has once again proven her nickname “Doechii The Don.” She graced us with another remarkable live presentation at NPR’s Tiny Desk. The rapper showcased her skills by performing a collection of songs, primarily from the Grammy-nominated mixtape titled “Alligator Bites Never Heal,” demonstrating yet again her masterful blends of melodies.
Title track “Top Dawg Entertainment’s Swamp Princess” has curated an exquisite collection of her favorite tunes, skillfully arranged into a continuous 23-minute medley with minimal pauses. Accompanied by a band decked in swamp attire, they delivered each piece flawlessly. The performance commenced with a jazzy adaptation of “BOOM BAP,” subtly modifying the lyrics midway to incorporate “NPR requested a rap from me.” As “BOILED PEANUTS” followed, it seamlessly merged into “DENIAL IS A RIVER,” carrying echoes of her previous Colbert performance but presenting a fresh, unique twist. Other standout tracks included the epic “NISSAN ALTIMA” and the nostalgic “Black Girl Memoir” to conclude the set.
