The superhero genre remains a favorite among audiences, as several interconnected universes vie for success at the movie theater. Co-CEO James Gunn is currently developing a fresh take on the DC Universe, with the initial lineup of productions known as Gods and Monsters. With excitement building around upcoming DC films, there’s much speculation about which characters will appear in this new shared universe. Could Aquaman be among them? Gunn provided his thoughts on the matter.
The director behind “Guardians” is now preparing for Season 2 of “Peacemaker,” a move that will broaden the scope of the DC Universe. Initially, the first “Superman” film introduced several other heroes, but it’s yet to be seen how Aquaman fits into the scheme. During a recent episode of the “Peacemaker” podcast, Gunn was asked about the character previously portrayed by Jason Momoa, and he responded:
Is Aquaman canon? We don’t know. I don’t think Aquaman is canon.
It appears there’s some ambiguity about it. Since James Gunn leads the DC Universe, one might expect him to know its future plans clearly. However, he’s not entirely sure if Aquaman is part of that universe yet. We’ll need to wait and watch for more developments.

Some fans might find it puzzling that Jason Momoa, who played Aquaman, appeared in Peacemaker Season 1, as this was part of a different shared universe. However, since Gunn has creative control over the aquatic hero, he can do whatever he wants with him. It’s unlikely that we’ll see Momoa reprising that role again.
In the same podcast later on, Gunn explained more about his statement regarding Aquaman not being real in the DC Universe. To quote him directly:
It seems quite rare for Aquaman to be as renowned a hero as Superman within the DCU, given that Peacemaker has a second season coming up.
It seems plausible that Arthur Curry could be real, yet he’s not widely recognized as the DC Universe’s superhero known as Aquaman. As for his future appearances, we’ll just have to wait and see. The plans of director Gunn and his team regarding this character remain unknown for now.
Previously stated, fans are eagerly anticipating another actor taking on the role of this hero should he reappear on screen. Given that Jason Momoa will portray the cosmic antihero Lobo in the DC Universe, it appears his tenure as Aquaman may be concluding. Imagine the intrigue if Momoa were to interact with the upcoming Aquaman in a future DC production! Indeed, one can only speculate and dream about such possibilities.
As a fervent advocate, I can’t help but express my excitement about the buzz surrounding DC right now. With James Gunn and his team diligently weaving an intricate franchise that encompasses TV series, movies, and video games, there’s no end to the questions swirling around. The recent box office success of Superman certainly kicked things off with a powerful punch!
